  1. This is Widget... MY GCC practicing her "dancing" on cue
  2. Well, currently I have a tiel named Ryley whom is a 5 year old female... and I have a green cheek conure named widget who is a year. I am familiar with CAGs.... its not really anything I havent done before, Im just kind of refreshing my education so to speak. Its been a few years since I have cared for a CAG. I helped a friend with hers for a long time. He came to my house to stay when she had to leave town. I LOVED IT! I love my fids. I cook for them every single day. Rice, pasta, veggies, bean salads, sprouts, birdie bread... you name it they have it. I am an organic eater as it is so most of what I eat, my birds can eat as well. I spend hours with my fids.... playing with them and just hanging out. Im very excited to add such a beautiful bird to our flock though. I am sure that I still have plently to learn, but this seems like a great place to learn what I need to know! Thanks for the warm welcome everyone Ill try to get some pics of Shiloh soon.
  3. My name is Rissa:) I am somewhat new here.... Ive been on the forum for awhile now... snooping around. I initially joined this forum because a close friend of mine had gotten a CAG and I wanted to learn more about them. I was then contemplating adopting one of my own as I absolutely fell in-love with CAGs but my life took quite a turn shortly after and I went through a divorce.... I decided that it was not the best time to become a new parront as I already had 2 birds at the time (tiels) But.... things have changed for the better since then, and I am now anticipating adopting a 3 year old male CAG named Shiloh. If all goes well, He should be with me in a month or so. I am VERY excited about this adoption! It feels almost like bringing a new baby into my home. I have done lots of research and reading on CAGs.... on this site and others, as well as talking to other CAG owners. I have this Amazing book "For the LOVE of GREYS" which has been so helpful. I look forward to meeting everyone... and learning as much as I can before my new little boy comes home. Rissa
  4. Hello Tias. Im Rissa. Im from Nebraska too :) Nice to meet you.

  5. lololololol... there are just some sounds I DON'T want my bird to mimic..... LOL:whistle:
  6. Judy, you said How exactly do you go about discouraging? I was told a firm "no" and the evil eye are most common ways, but would a baby that is still learning get the point? I was also told that if they are "beaking" you and it gets too rough to point to the beak and say no firmly so that they know what you are not happy about. Would that be a productive method?
  7. I am trying to choose a cage for my grey. Although I do not have one yet, I would like to have it all set up with fun toys and perches and whatnot. However I need some ideas. This is where you can help: Please post a picture of your bird's cage. I would like to see how people have situated their cages and also what types are used. Dont be shy.... I really appriciate the help!:cheer: Thanks!
  8. I was reading on a site about Greys and the publisher of the site suggested having two separate cages for your grey. She said a large one in the family area for day time with toys and such, and then also a smaller cage in a quieter location for bed-time. Is this nessecary? Is it a good idea? She said that her night cages were in the bedroom. I am not sure I want my bird in my bedroom. Just wanted some opinions on this. Thanks in advance
  9. I just wanted to know for the majority, is your bird noisy? Does he/she talk alot, whistle alot, or scream alot? Does your bird quiet down when you put him/her to bed in the evenings? thanks
  10. I am not a grey parront yet, but hope to be soon. Here is a picture of me
  11. Oh I love the WF pearl! What a pretty girl. My chickin is a pearl as well but I am beginning to think that she is a he, as the pearling near ht back is fading. Boys dont keep their pretty pearls past a year. Chickin is very special to me because I hand-fed her and I just have this bond with her that I dont have with my other three... all this time I have been calling her a she.. what if she is a he? My poor lil fid might have a gender complex! I dont want to have to change chickin's name to Rooster! LOL:whistle:
  12. I was just wondering if anyone could post some links to good training. I found this one on youtube. Is it reliable information? Thanks guys!
  13. thanks guys! i love my fids spoiled spoiled fids!
  14. i love pictures! what a handsome darwin!

The breeder socilizes her babies and they are very sweet. As far as routine goes, I honestly dont think that adding a grey to my schedule would be that much of a change. I spend alot of time with my tiels and so do my kids and my husband. having birds is a very enjoyable part of my life.
  16. she wrote: Thank you Sheila. That was very nice of you. The reason I am taking my time on this whole thing is I really want to know what I am getting myself into before I get into it and find that its not what I expected or doesn't fit my lifestyle or whatever..... Too many birdies are re-homed each year because people take on a pet, which is a huge responsibility in itself, but they do so without proper research. They dont ask questions, they dont read, nothing. They just see the smart cute bird, on tv or youtube and then decide they want one. They get home with the bird, and after the "new" wears off the bird isn't exciting anymore. Generally in the cases that I saw, owners lost interest, bird lost attention, bird acted out, owners re-homed bird. This process can go on FOREVER before the poor lil things find a permanent home. I CAN'T SEE MYSELF DOING THAT! I visited a sanctuary before and I also had a friend that did rescues with all sorts of animals. Animals that have to be re-homed over and over again are hard to bond with. They dont trust people. Rescuers have to work very hard with them to get them adopted into a forever home, and the adoptive parents do too. Its just not a happy process and I dont want to add another birdy into that system. Somebody at one time loved each and every bird or pet in a rescue, but they went off to school, or they moved to where they cant have pets, or they got tired of them and on and on..... I want my love for a pet to be forever. I have 4 tiels and they will stay with me until they pass. I love them and they are part of my family and I made a commitment to them that I intend to stick through with. I want to be 100% absolutely sure I can do the same with a grey. okay wow that was long. I'll get off my soapbox now. Thanks for listening......
  17. Congrats! What a handsome fid! I cant wait to have one of my own
  18. So here's the thing, I live in a small small town, and we do not have alot of products for birds in our stores. I want to start to toy shop for my grey so that I will have some exciting, fun yet safe toys to use to teach him/her how to play. The thing is, I have no idea what to get. I read somewhere that infant toys can be fun for them.. like the beaded teethers and some rattles but I am unsure. How do I know what is safe? What do your greys like to play with? Would anyone mind posting a picture of the toy as well as information on where you purchased it and about how much it was? Thanks so so so much!
  19. LisaM wrote: Most varied? Im not sure what you mean. With my Tiels, I feed them Zupreem pellets, a small amout of a seed mixture, and then fresh foods. I make birdy breads and layered salads for them. They have cuddle bones and mineral stones avaliable to them at all times, and I change out their water atleatst 2-3 times a day so its always fresh. I was intending to do the same with my grey. Is that a good start? Am I leaving anything out?
  20. Thanks guys for all your wonderful responses. They are very helpful for me. I dont really know anyone in my local area that can assist me in answering these sorts of questions. Even the breeder that I might be getting a baby from lives 3 hours from me lol Could anyone elaborate on how to "shape my baby" What things should I do to ensure that he/she is going to be a well mannered companion? Are there things that I should keep my baby away from? Are there things I should expose my baby to? I know how to handle a baby tiel, but from what I gather, greys are much more different and comlicated. Thanks so much again everyone!:cheer:
  21. cool. thanks a bunch guys! Oh and could anyone give me some tips on target training or recall? I have never heard of that before. thanks again, you guys are soooooo helpful!
  22. I love all the baby pictures! I cant wait to have a Grey i'm so excited
  23. I am just wondering at what age should you start to offer a baby CAG pellets and fresh foods? Also at what age do they typically start to wean? Thanks!
