I got my grey when I was 15. I had many people tell me that it was a bad idea and that I would be getting rid of him when I went to college. I'm happy to say that through college, moving out on my own, getting married and having a baby my grey is still a huge part of my life. It really seems to me that you have already made up your mind and you most likely wont be swayed. You have done the research and have a pretty good idea of what you are getting into. Just make sure that every one in the home is on the same page and that you get a very large cage and make a stimulating environment. Here are a few easy things to help make time for a grey. Eat breakfast together. You will end up eating better that way Shower and get ready for the day together. Put a t-stand/climbing tree next to your study area. TV time is always grey time! Plan dates/outings after your greys bed time. Very few people will advise you to get a grey at your age but I've been there and done that. If you are any where as determined as I was you will make a wonderful grey owner. Good luck and please let us know what happens.

I thought I would post this here as it does pertain to baby greys It has been brought to my attention that a few members here are breeders. I am looking to ad a baby grey to my flock this year and am having a very hard time finding a breeder that breeds the large very light African greys. So, if you know of a breeder or you are a breeder please let me know.

Lilosmom, I got my Pionus the day before my sons due date. She was a rescue not tame and being kept in a parakeet cage. I thought the situation would be ideal. She would be able to keep Taco company while not taking away from my time with the baby or Taco. Pepper Ann might just be a foster but she will most likely stay. My routine changes day to day but I can give you a general idea. My husband takes the dogs out before he leaves for work at 5:45am. In the morning @ about 7 Chase wakes up and nurses then goes back to sleep. I get an hour to do what I need to including hang with the birds. Chase wakes up and we head off to work. My husband comes home at lunch and lets the dogs out. I get back from work at 4:45 and we make dinner watch a little TV let the dogs out and bring the birds to the living room. My husband goes to bed with chase at about 8:30-9:00pm and I get an hour or two to myself. I change food and water and clean the house a little. The birds and I go to bed at about 10-10:30 My cages get the bedding changed only about twice a week right now:unsure: and cleaned about once every month and a half. They don't attack each other if thats worth anything:laugh: They call back and forth but have never been put together. They both have the doors of their cages open 24/7 so if they ever feel the need to hang out they can. I am well aware of the risks of having a bird outside with out a harness. It is a personal choice that was made after much thought and research.

The base is made out of a plastic serving tray that was left over from thanksgiving. You can use just about anything as the base as long as you keep an eye on the bird. This was really fun to make. It is a great craft for kids too.<br><br>Post edited by: birdgirl, at: 2009/01/27 16:59

Congratulations!!! I just went through the same thing. I started out by talking about the baby with my grey. I also talked about all the names I was thinking about for the baby. After the baby's room was set up I took Taco into the room and let him perch on the crib, check out the toys and I sang the songs that I now sing to the baby. Taco has taken everything in stride. I just have to remember that I can't hold Taco and the baby at the same time. Taco will bite me if I am on the phone or holding the baby. If you think you can handle the extra cleaning and care of another bird I think it would be a good idea. Please keep in mind that no matter how much energy you may think you'll have after the birth, you wont:P Good luck, everything will be fine in the long run.

Nice to meet you both. I know that "Cameroon" is not a separate sub species however I also know that it is a term used to describe the larger lighter birds. I was hoping that some one would see the term know what I was referring to and lead me in the right direction. I can not handle my Pionus yet. I've only had her two months and had a baby 3 days after I brought her home.:whistle: I have been working with her and she is getting better about taking food and I've even started doing step ups on to a perch. She has a deformed foot and is having a very hard time stepping up onto the perch so it is going really slow. I have had Taco a long time and hope to have him for many, many more years:lol:

I made two of these a few years ago and absolutely loved them. I think they coast my a grand total of $5 each.
