Hello...I lost my baby grey to PBFD yesterday it all happened so quickly and it is quite shocking! i still have all his things around the house and cant bring myself to putting them away. I took him to Nad Al Sheba Vet. Hospital and Dr. Guilio was very helpful unfortunately we couldn't do anything but put him to sleep. I would love to have another grey but i am too traumatized with the experience and i wouldnt trust any pet store! so Faisal if you could please give me the details of the breeder? or if anyone knows someone giving up their grey for adoption? Thanks a lot, Noor

Sirocco was put to sleep this afternoon, the diagnosis asi forgot to mention previously is PBFD beak and feather disease, he is in a better place now, it reached to a point that he was too weak to perch and was vomiting everything he ate I am shocked how his condition deteriorated so rapidly and he has been carrying it all this time!! and there was nothing we could do but end his misery. I am gonna miss him...

My baby grey of 11 months spent the night at the hospital after we rushed him in due to his very unusual behavior. He was extremely quite for 3 days and until i noticed that he was dozing off on his perch several times that i realized that he is not being moody and something is wrong that i called the veterinary hospital and she told me to bring him in as soon as possible. After examination the doctor decided to do the following tests: - Bacteriology - Cytology - Haematology - Biochemistry - Radiology He also gave him a shot of anti-biotic and vitamins, it was adviced that he stays at the hospital for supervision until we get the results the next day. I would also like to bring to your attention that I was away on vacation for 12 days and during that time my father took care of him and he already knows how to handle him and what are the foods he likes and the foods which are bad for him. After i came back he was very hyper and happy to see me even the next day he was fine he even woke me up in the morning by immitating a knock on the door then calling out my name. As for the next 3 days as i mentioned he was very quiet and refused to step up instead he would put his head down and i would give him a scratch. I thought it was because i was away all this time and he was giving me some of his attitude! because there are times when he likes to be left alone but not for long usually he loves bieng out. I got a call from the hospital this morning and he doesnt have much time since his blood count results came back and there are no white blood cells in the count at all due to a virus and as the doctor explained there is no cure and nothing we can do for him and usually they last a few hours or a few days after diagnosis. I am still in shock and i dont know what to do- that is if there is anything i CAN do and there must be something. So please i ask anyone with knowledge about this case to share it with me. Thank You Noor

Thank you everyone for your very thoughtful and helpful replies. I did eventually find two cages which are quite big and the price is good- the same range that i found online. Dan you are right shipping it means they r gonna calculate the weight and the distance which would cost me a fortune wether i buy it from US or UK. I still didnt decide on which one i would get one is a bit oval and the other is just like Bmustee's cage but with a play top. And by the way Bmustee i love the idea about wrapping the new toy! Just one more quick question i know i jumped from him bieng scared of a new toy to a new subject of buying him a cage  but stainless steel or coated cage? Thanks a lot Regards, Noor

Thanx Acapella! Well yes the weather in Dubai surely is nice and sunny compared to other parts of the world but for us who go through a 50C summer 19C is quite cold hehehe You are welcome to enjoy a sunny winter in Dubai Cheers, Noor

Alright so i would like to thank you for the tips and advice because now he has accepted it and its in his cage and he's loving it I let him play around it for two days and then yesterday i tried putting it in the cage and he went to it Cant wait to buy him a new bigger cage. The shop brought in some new cages and am gonna go look at them, where i live there isnt many options for cages or parrot supplies, and if i order i would pay double the price in shipping costs (for a cage). For the time being he stays in this cage shown below. He is enjoying the afternoon on the balcony

Post edited by: nhrh, at: 2009/01/16 00:00

I was very happy to buy my grey 3 new additions to his cage. I bought him a perch with a twisting colorful shapes end,a bendable perch, and an acrylic toy with a bell which i can hang in the cage. After assembling everything i placed him in the cage and he was desperate to get out. at first i thought that it was because i was out for a long time and he didnt wanna go back in there and be alone so he stayed with me but when it was bedtime i put him back in the cage and again he refused and thats when i realized that he could be scared or maybe just disliking the new perch because it was the largest and most apparent. After removing it he was back to normal and went inside his cage for a good night sleep. How can i introduce it in the cage without scaring him? Thanks, Noor

Post edited by: nhrh, at: 2009/01/12 22:29

Thank you Baxter's mom... I will replace it with soymilk+oats to stay on the safe side. lot of the recipes that I found in the food room help a lot. I am currently hand feeding him twice a day and giving hima seed mix fresh fruits or fresh veggies while am at work.

My baby lovves grapes and oatmeal second comes apples only red and yellow doesnt like green. He is not a big fan of veggies but i am cutting down on fruits and adding more veggies in his diet its working fine he eats his veggies but goes crazy for fruits!

My grey (5months old)loves Cerelac i hand feed him twice a day and i mix some fresh fruits or veggies with it. Its gotten to a point where if there is no cerelac he doesnt enjoy the food, i've tried cutting down on it but he loves it so much. I usually mix oatmeal with apple, grapes and banana instead. The problem is i didnt realize it had milk until today now i feel really bad because they are lactose intolerant and i stopped giving it to him. Can i use soy milk in the fruit mix for him? Thanks

Im so sorry about your loss....No words can make up for it i know but we are all here to support you. Dont blame yourself at all.. but make sure that this breeder gets what she deserves before hurting more parrots!

My grey is still a baby about 5 months now so he cant really talk but i love how he mumbles things in the cutest baby voice the most obvious words are "hey" and "hello" he also mumbled "i love you!" which melted my heart he said it once otherwise its cute mumbles which i cant make out mostly while he is playing, in the morning, and strangely when am on the phone its like he does it to attract my attention, and last but not least when i put him back in his cage at night. Its the cutest thing i will miss the baby talk when he grows up! At what age do they start astually talking?
-
HAHAHAHA! thats soo cute!! poor thing though she must have been scared! Good you took a shot of it, thats not something you see everyday!
-
Hello everyone thank you for your replies, i have been giving it some time to notice the changes and it seems like its a molt because everytime he fluffs his feathers or flutters his wings there is tiny little white feathers that spread all over. I also havent noticed any plucked grey feathers except for 2 small ones which i dunno if they have been plucked or fallen out. How long does a molt usually last? does he lose everything all together or its gradual? Jane & Caroline thanks for helping me with the pics Thanks, Noor

Well its good to know that this is part of their character and its normal. I will give him his space whenever he asks for it without bieng pushy. But i will always be fascinated by his attitude and sudden change of character! hehe Thanks guys
-
I know you may find this kinda strange but i had my cag for almost a month now and my fiance and i still didnt pick a name beacuse we wanted something to fit his character so we are waiting to get to know him a bit more,..i will let you know as soon as we name him!
-
After spending quality time with my grey -5months old-(we still didnt name him because we r waiting for inspiration for what fits him the most when we get to know him) which would be almost a month now i noticed that these birds really got some attitude! They are very loving and they melt your heart with their mumbling in a baby voice but then you try to get him out of his cage and suddenly its a different character if he's not in the mood to get out he just gives out this noise which i can best describe as groaning/growling not sure really, he moves along the perch towards the end of the cage or starts climbing all around it. Sometime he politley turns his back to me . Ofcourse i try to repect that and leave him alone and i say try because i give it several shots thinking maybe he will give in after i talk to him or pet him. Most recently i noticed him getting angry on several occassions while playing with his toys if he has a hard time getting a grip on it or for some reason it annoyed him he would let out this loud scream and tosses it! or while he is climbing his cage he would get frustrated for some reason and scream ( the scream is more like a louder version of the growl)that i witnessed once today. It amazes me how he can be so sweet and loving and suddenly become Mr. Attitude to me that is quite a mystery. I dunno if greys usually have that attitude or my grey has an attitude problem which i would love to work around if i get some advice from you guys.

oops the pic was too large i will try and resize again

ok so his eyes are silver grey just like your baby's eyes! he isnt 4 months old after all so how come they told me so???!! i cant believe it... this is very strange.... Well, the feathers are all fluffy white ones no big feathers so it could probably be just a molt right?
