I am older and my parrots are everything to me. I do worry about them however and think about future homes for them all the time. None of my children are bird people, they prefer cats!!!!! I have given a parrot away, not sold but gave him away because it was just the best thing for him. I found him in a pet shop and he was miserable and screamed all the time there. I purchased him and he calmed down, although he was still a plucker. I have a neighbor young male friend that liked Sully and so after about a year I give Sully to Jordan. The whole family adore Sully and they are very happy. I do not regret the giving, I just wish I had been able to do for Sully what this family has and am rather jealous of their achievement!! So yes I would have given a parrot away. My oldest daughter has promised to find homes for my parrots when I am gone if I have not done so on my own and to give them away to the right people if that is what's best. Because you cannot put a price on love.

I dim the lights and close the drapes in my parrot's room and they seem to know that it is now time to go to sleep. I give them fresh dry food and water and tell them nite, nite time. They will go back into their cages and have a snack and settle for the night. Try making the atmosphere more evening like and see if that will get Max back into this cage on his own. I would not continue to have Max's former owner over at this time, as this gives Max hope that she is there for him. Grey's are very intelligent, and he will soon learn that acting up gets his former owner back every time. Just relax and be at ease, Max senses your feelings so be in charge and relax so Max will also. I have a BF zon that I have had since September, Louie still does not trust me to touch him, we are working on it and I know he wants to be my friend, it will just take time.

Ana Grey does this screech that drives me nuts!!!! You would think she was some unlearned imbecile when she does it. Not a brain in her head!!!!! LOL!

I got them from: http://www.thecountryroost.com. They are collapsible travel cages and they come in two sizes. I got the larger ones so they could be used for my parrots while visitiing my kids. I have to admit I totally love my re-homed Zon, Louie!!!

Hi Bluefishburley, welcome to the Grey family! Looking forward to seeing some pictures of Woody and hearing all about the both of you becoming acquainted!

Well, I have an update on Sully. Sully's owner asked to borrow my Aviator Harness yesterday to take Sully for a walk to the store. Sully has never been in a harness but he likes Jordan a lot so I showed him how to put it on a parrot and wished them the best. Well Jordan came back happy as a lark because the walk was a success and the worst part was trying to get the harness off after the walk. I admitted to Jordan that I was a little jealous that Sully has bonded so well with him and his family. Ada, the mom, loves Sully to pieces and tells Jordan she is keeping Sully when Jordan moves out!!!!!! Anyhow, they are doing great and the whole family is very happy with Sully and Sully has stopped chewing chest and back feathers, but has moved to wings, which surprises me. I am hoping the wings are really molting not being pulled. Sully also says, up, up (for step up) for them. So perhaps talking will be next for this sweet big lug!!!!!

It is very green and pleasant here, Birdnut so come on by!!! I guess that's why they call it the "Evergreen State!" It is can rain anytime as well as be sunny! Ray, I do believe Louie is teasing me. He will come very close to me, but will not step up or let me touch him if I reach for him. He is a tease!!!!! I wish I had talked to the husband who owned Louie to see what the schedule was and how they interacted. Because he was ill, perhaps Louie was really a cage bird and the hubby just talked to him or Louie just sit near him. I guess I will never know now, I'll just keep trying because Louie is really worth any trouble he can be. He is so smart and playful! He also knows how to get along with Ana Grey, the little Diva, and not break a sweat!!!!

Louie and I have been struggling to get along with each other. I can finally get Louie out of his cage and into a traveling cage so I can take him outside or into the living room. He still will not let me touch him without trying to bite me but he will finally get into the travel cage without chasing him!!!! Louie now knows to go back to the birdroom at night when I say, "Nite, Nite Louie. Time to go nite nite." He will fly back to the birdroom after seeing that I have turned the hall light on. Getting him back into the cage has finally come down to a tap on the cage. It is not ideal, I wish he trusted me to touch him, but at least he is very smart and does what I want about going out of the cage (never been a problem) and now back into the cage (more or less with a tap or two on the cage door). Perhaps one day, he will let me touch him and trust me too!!!! He is a jewel to have around and I wouldn't trade him for less than a million or two!

This was wonderful news to hear that Val is home, safe and sound. I am ecstatic for you both. This is my worst fear for my Ana Grey. I know she wants to fly outdoors so very much. If I go outside there she is sitting my the door waiting for her chance to fly out if I am careless. Every time I put her harness on her and take her out she tries at least once to take flight she wants to be free outside so very much. Does she enjoy being with me?? I believe very much but she is a bird and so wants to fly in the breeze as God intended. I really can't blame her. I do have cloth screening over both of my outside doors and wooden beads in the doorway. It looks funny and visitors and salespeople look at me weird, but I don't care. If you come to my house be quick and get inside when I welcome you as I would never hesitate to shut the door in a person's face to keep my birdies in and safe if I hear flapping wings coming my way! May God keep Val home safely with her loved ones.

Marcus certainly is very entertaining! I love hearing about him!

When I first got my BFzon, he was overweight. I feed him the same as Ana Grey, he just eats a little more because he is much larger. Now that Louie flies everyday and is very active, he has slimmed down and looks marvelous. I give both my parrots, hard boiled eggs now and then and at least once a week I chopped up fresh vegetables, radishes, carrots, snap peas, broccoli, cauliflower, and brussel sprouts (whatever is handy) and give them to my birdies. I don't give my parrots much meat, as they do not like it very much. Dried vegetables and seeds and nuts are always around for them. A piece of apple or other fruit is something they like here and there. Both birdies have healthy appetites and fly around the house all day long. So yes, I use the same dos and don'ts for both parrots.

I am excited about hearing how things go with Pancho now that he is finally home. I love amazons almost as much as greys!!!! My zon, Louie lifts his wings and bobs hid head and I think it is just his way of showing excitement or satisfaction at seeing me. This is usually when I am bringing in breakfast or about to open his cage in the morning. Louie is just 3 years old so I don't believe it is anything other than excitement. My 3 year old grey bobs her head and does the wing thing also and it is just happiness or excitement at what is happening.

So far my parrots have no problems taking care of the molting feathers on their own. Just be patient and they can take care of a loose/out of place feather or a molting one.

My parrots sleep in the everyday cage. I have drapes over the windows of the room and it is quite dark at night and the light filters in, in the AM. When I visit family, my parrots sleep in travel cages which I purchased from Country Roost. http://www.thecountryroost.com/catalog/default.php?cPath=28_29&osCsid=69ff9909f48c4491f0b3cec829144385

I have a "self-cleaning button" on my oven and I just clean my oven on a sunny day and put my parrots outside in their travel cages for the morning. I open the door and windows to air the place out when the oven shuts off. I also have an exhaust fan in my hall and I turn that on while the oven is cleaning. Frankly, I have only cleaned the oven once since I have had my parrots. I usually just check the oven after baking and clean up any light spills when they happen. No problems then.

Happy Hatchday General Beauregard!!! Here's hoping you have many, many more wonderful Hatchday celebrations!!!!!!

Everywhere is different, I live in Washington State and I got my TAG for $600, three years ago. I have recently looked into CAGs in California for $875 and in Oregon for $750/$775. So it all depends on the State you live in.

Hi Blovekhi, welcome to the Grey family! Would love to see some pictures of your greys and hear more about them!
-
It's funny what grey parronts worry about. I am going on 65 and have had an artificial aortic heart value for over 35 years. My grey is almost 3 and I worry about who will take her when I am gone. None of my family are "bird" people, funny since I have always loved birds. Of all things they all have cats and adore them!!!!!! My oldest daughter says the first place she will come to is here and see if she can find a parront for Ana Grey among all the loving grey owners. I just laugh at her and say I know she will keep Ana Grey only so she can hear my voice, every day and not miss me!!!!! LOL!!!!

Why don't you tell us a little more about you and your situation. Are you saying you will be working very long hours or attending school very long hours. A few details might be helpful.

Welcome Kingsnake, looking forward to hearing about your new grey and seeing pictures when you get him/her home.

I did as Ana Grey's breeder total me to, when I brought her home, I held and talked softly to her before I put her in her cage. the breeder said this is what Ana Grey was use to, to be cuddled and loved and that is what I did. Be aware that Ana Grey's breeder held her babies all the time and even made sure they were "user friendly" before she ever let them leave her home. All people interested in her babies had to come into her home and be selected, more or less. I had the choice of five weaned babies and Ana Grey was the one that wanted to stay on my hand and when I put her back in the cage with the others, she stayed by the door wanting to come back to me. We all agreed this was the grey for me. Millie, the breeder, sent home with me enough food for a month, there was a call on my home phone from the breeder wanting to know if Ana Grey was home safely. Ana Grey was the oldest of the five grey (by days) and very self-assured. Ana Grey eats best with me, she loves to steal my lunch or dinner. I think she believes she is human and if I do something she does like she tells me so "Stop that" is something she never hesitates to say to me if I put her in her cage, take something away from her or just scold her. When you go to see new greys, watch their eyes and actions, if there is one who chooses you, you will know it. It will be obvious.
