thanks for that dave, but its going to cost me £51.80 to get that shipped over here.. is there anywhere in the uk i can get some from? iv had a quick look but cant seem to find any... they want over £35 for shipping a $15 jar? i do have pure aloe juice i will start using until i can find where to get hold of this product. thanks once again di & monty

hi just read the thread and i have the same problem with monty. he is two & half years old but has just started shredding his feathers, but unlike primusDCE monty has done all his back feathers and chest feathers too ( will try an add a pic) i think it may have started 6-7 months ago when he clipped his wing whilst flying from the lounge to the conservatory, he broke some his wing feathers half way across and started to chew them off, i think this has just escalated into him chewing every where... i do spray him but he growls and doesnt like it so maybe dont do it as oftern as i should as i dont want to upset him even more. he is out of his cage all day until bed time and has so may toys and trees to keep him amused ( i have enclosed a pic) but the pic only shows a tiny protion of what he has to keep him entertained. i would love any suggestions as to what to do as the amount of time that has passed since him catching his wing and he is still chewing. the only feathers on his chest & back is the soft downy stuff and you can see through this. he plays and talks loads and his behaviour and diet are still the same. he doesnt pluck the feathers out he chews them and shreds them.... thanks in advance diane

Hi Judygram thanks for the reply. There hasn't been any thing else that has changed as far as i know. He was sitting looking out of front window at the time and flew off and clipped his wing on the door frame. he usually sits there on his perch, and dosn't get spooked to easy so can't really say this may be a cause. as regards to bathing we do mist him with the bottle but having read your threads think we might be doing it from to far away. I will get closer and try to get him as wet as possible. He does go into the ensuite when we shower and sits on the shower door but wont let us take him inside .he is as chatty as normal and he has pulled all of the broken feather off now, i will just have to monitor what he does with the rest of his feathers. when you feel his chest it's all prickly so i can tell that he has chewed the feathers there, but he hasn't actually pulled any out... he isn't bald...kust very scraggly lol . I will continue with the spraying and keep an eye one him thanks again di

My Monty is 2 1/2 years old and is flighted. He has approx 8-10 hours a day out of his cage.The length of his flight path through the lounge, dining room & conservatory is 51ft with the lounge & dining room both being 12ft wide and the conservatory 21ft wide. I think you'll agree he has lots of room, But needless to say whilst flying one day last wk he clipped his wing on a door frame. This dint bother him but he has broken his feathers right across his wing. I can only guess that this is now annoying him as he wont leave them alone and has started to shred them. I am guessing that he wont give up until he has chewed all the broken ones off, but I am a little concerend as he has shredded all his chest feathers too now . is there anything i can do to help? I dont want this to turn him into plucker. He has regular baths ( in his water bowl lol) and apart from looking like a scraggy (adorable) rat then he's fine with no behaviour change. Any advise would be gratefully received, shall I intervine or let things run their course? thanks Di & Monty

oh wow how this site has changed it's fab... I have not been on here for at least 12months just popped on to see if i could find and answer to another question i've got about monty.. didnt have much luck in finding a suitable thread but I did notice this one and allthough it seems like an old topic, I felt I just had to post my biting story. It happened about 6 months ago and monty had been climbing on the door handle of my french doors and had slipped and fell, he's a pretty nifty flyer as he is out of his cage for about 8 to 12 hours a day, and he mamaged to take off from about 1ft above the foor, fly between my 1 sofas in the conservatory and land on his java tree all out of puff (lol). I hurried over to make sure he was ok as I saw the whole thing happen, he stepped up on my hand and I took him over to his stand so he could get a drink and calm down, I leaned forward to give him a little kiss and he bit my lip. I knew straight away it was totally my fault, I had picked the wrong moment for kisses. My lip was bouring with blood,and i was home alone. I asked monty to step up on my hand and he did so no problem and I put him in his cage,sorted him fresh fruit and water, and then took my self upto the hospital for them to have a look at as I couldnt stop it bleeding and there was a hole, which i was worried about infection. The nurses said it needed stitching but they couldnt do it because the bite passed through the lip line and it might not heal straight,So! I was given an appointment to go straight upto to see the plastic surgeon, and 5 hours later, because i had to wait while she was in theatre, she stitched it for me, 4 stitches we insterted and now 6 months on its all healed lovley with just a tiny moon shaped scar hardley visible..... needless to say I dont give monty any more kisses.......

thankx casper:P i am leaving the house with my 20 year old son and 17 year old daughter and not even give a thought to their well being:lol: so long as there is food in i know they will be alright, but monty, OMG!! what a worry;) I just want to do the best for him while we're away. thanks guys im much more settled now at leaving monty at home, im sure he'll be fine... just one last little quiestion:whistle: poop!!!!:blink: monty never poops in any of his cages as he spends so much time out them. he waits till morning for his BOMB!!! and waits until some get him out after work before doing his poop, i was just wondering, will he be ok and realise, probably when he is desperate, that it's ok to to poop in his cage? i have never told him not to poop in his cage he just chooses not too and im a little worried, hoping he won't make himself ill... thanks in advance.......

i was thinking tho it might be easire let him sleep in his down stairs cage, do u think this will be ok, will it upset his sleep too much?

thanks guys for the replys... monty has a very large cage which is down stairs and he goes in this at 2.30 untill 5.30 when hubby comes home. his sleep cage is in our bedroom. my daughter is the one who monty will let handle and when we go out for odd evening she manages to get him in his cage ( in one piece :whistle: ). he isnt perch trained as he always flies off when he goes near his cage. i think he spends so much time out that he just doesnt want to go back in.also he never climbs volentry into his cage. he sits every night on the back of the chair saying bo bo's time but when we take him up he will fly off (given the chance) to the top of the door. so we put one hand over his wings and he goes in usually without too much fuss and settles down right away, grinding his beak well thats after he's sat for 5 minutes with his beak poking through the bars having lots of kisses :kiss: :woohoo: i think i will feel much better going away knowing he is at home, and if i start letting my daughter put him to bed from now until september he and she will be used to it.

another thing is that monty usually bites the kids.. :whistle: ...so they wouldnt be having him out, would this be cruel when he can see all his toys and climbing things in the next room but to be able to get to them... should i start now giving him more cage time in readyness for september??

i have just read all these posts as im am now in the same boat. monty will be 17 months in spetember when we go away for a week adn i am already worried about what to do with him. i have already booked him in the pet shop like casper did at first, but im really worried will he be ok? monty is a fully flighted, out of the cage bird for at lest 10-14hours every day, more at wk ends and we have never left him in the time we've had him. i know he will hate been in a cage for a week 24/7 at the shop. i could leave him here and trust to my 2 kids feeding and watering him, in his own very large cage in his own enviroment, but they are 18 and 21 and will probably have a house full of mates with the load music, so im stuck as for what to do.. monty has seen all these mates and heard the loud music before when in his cage but we're are usually right there and so the kids tend not to get too out of hand, but while we're away who knows? do u guys think monty will be better of at home, which may calm the kids a little because he's here or would u go for the pet shop option?it really worries me and we nearly didnt go away this year at all purley because of monty but then i realised he's gonna be here a long time and to never have any more holidays just isnt fair on us. thanks in advance x

OMG !! last thursday was montys 1st biethday as u know and we sang happy birthdy to him..and guess what??? by yesterday ( tuesday ) he was singing it right back :woohoo: :laugh: and dancing too lol :silly: i am amazed at how quickly he has picked this phrase up as "happy birthday to you" is quite a long phrase .. in the past he has taken around 2 wks to pick up anything but now he's getting qicker.. is this the norm??? thanks for all the lovley comments about him he is truly an amazing, adorable,little monster who keeps us on our toes, cant imagine life without him now :kiss: :kiss:

OMG does'nt time fly Monty is 1 already just trying to post some recent pics of him.. he had a new apple tree to play on for his birthday and he loves it... he is talking loads too now, with a range of phrases,like, want a shower? give us a kiss,i love you, love you dadda,wheres dadda?hello, and when we go out he says,bye bye going now love u since his birthday last thursday he has been trying to sing happy birthday,sure he will get it one day any how i'll have a go with the photos
