Thank you Sue and Dan. Sue, he is a one-man bird - the man being me. Nothing has changed his in surroundings or appearance. I've had him since he was 12 weeks old. I do not react with the bites, I simply give a strong "No!" or "No bite!". My friend in Michigan suggested I give a little thump on the beak when he does it. That seems to be working. It seems Dan is right he is trying to assert his will and when I thump and say "No!" he backs down. It also helps if I hold his beak with one hand and scratch his neck with the other. I am going to have to research this more. He does it constantly while sitting on my chest so putting him back on his cage or in it doesn't seem to have any effect. Any suggestions on threads or games to play while on my chest? I have a very deep voice so playing peek-a-boo or "gotch your feet" doesn't interest him. I miss my baby who never bit and always wanted his neck scratched! Whhaaaaaa! LOL

My 16 month old CAG is starting to bite and pin his eyes a lot. What are some possible causes? Not enough attention? Springtime? Hormones? Age? Robert

My Jaco (CAG) weighs 435g on an empty stomach. He is 15 months old. Anyone know what age they stop gaining weight?

Thank you all for sharing. Raposa that sounds exactly like my Grey when he talks in his sleep. Thank you DavidH that puts a lot of insight on this topic. Robert

I have heard him say his name (Jaco) and good boy. He also mumbles a lot. He does this very often. I am often awake at night because I work overnight shifts at a hospital and with just my laptop computer on I can hear and see him. His cage is in my bedroom. His cage is also not covered at night (he doesn't like it). It's very strange. He is definately asleep while doing this. He has also fallen off his perch and crashed on the bottom while sleeping in the middle of the night. He was disoriented and confused after it happened. Is he dreaming???

Anyone else have an African Grey that talks and/or mumbles in their sleep? Anyone ever heard of this?

I LOVE your bird room Carol. It's the envy of all for sure. Can my Grey Jaco come play?

Thank you ladies for the reply.

My 15 month old AG molted for a few months then stopped for a month and now seems to be starting again. Is this normal?

Hi I am having the same problem as the poster, except with a twist. My roommate has 1 Doberman and 1 rescue Greyhound. The cage is in my bedroom and the play gym is in hte living room. Both dogs have tried to bite Jaco. He is learning to fly after growing a few flight feathers back though he usually lands on the dangerous floor. The dogs can't be locked up a couple hours a day. If I clip his wings will he learn not to fly and stay on his play gym? Otherwise he will have to stay in my bedroom without me all day. Should I try to clip once and if that still doesn't work then the wings will grow back and he can learn to fly again? Guess he may stay in my room 'til I may move out. Robert

Thanks Dan- I figured from my research on this site that mt options were either clip his wings or get rid of the perch and keep him in my room. And I won't clip his wings. Unless someone here has a good reason that I should  Robert

I made my 15 month old CAG, Jaco, a homemade wood gym that stands on the floor, has lots of hanging toys, and goes up 4 feet or so. I recently moved in with my roommate and she has a rescue greyhound and a doberman. Jaco has a bay window in my bedroom to look out of but I thought he needed some "out of the room" time for his stimulus and bigger flock. (It would also allow me to be out of the bedroom and not be attatched to him). Unfortunately, the dogs are not taking a liking to him. Also, he tends to fly (and crash land) a lot when I am not in visible range. One time he flew and the greyhound grabbed him with his jaw. I am trying water bottles to train the dogs and they hate getting squirted. But, I do not know what to do to get Jaco from stop flying. Once Jaco stops flying I think I can get the dogs to calm down and get used to him. I don't want to have to sell this giant gym but it's looking that way. Anyone have any advice???

In other words my main concern is that if I have to put him in his cage and shut it during the day so i can sleep and he wont fly to me...then he wont get enough out of cage time.

Hi All My CAG, Jaco, is very needy. Whenever I go into the bathroom or bedroom he flies from his cage and waddles over to me. I was sleeping the living room of my one bedroom apartment but now I have a bed and sleep in the bedroom. I work nights and like to keep him out on his cage during the day as I sleep. Also, he growls at anyone who comes in the door. The maintenance guy scared him a few weeks ago and he's never been the same around people. I know he is a "one man bird". I am worried because I live by myself. Should I rehome with a family? Is a flock of two healthy for him? Thanks for the input! Robert

Ok... So the maintenance guy came over yesterday to fix my air conditioning... while I was at the movies. It was Jaco's first time alone in the apt. with someone he didn't know. I know, I screwed up! Now he growls at anybody who comes through the door. I have tried easing him into a person. He is just too traumatized! Any helpful tips? I know I should probably take him to a bird meeting to get him more socialized....He has had territory issues. For instance, he flies to the bathroom when i'm showering or doing something else in there. He thinks the whole apt. is his territory. It is just him and I in a small apt. I am his only flock But he gets TONS of toys and TONS of play time with me. He is also let out of his cage at LEAST 12 hours EVERY day. He is just a loving bird. He has NEVER and i mean never bitten me. He loves to cuddle... loves to get his neck scratched. He is mumbling and saying his first words. Now all of a sudden he hates all other people. He is 7 months old.

I know it's a bad camera pic. It's not dry. I added colored pellets 2 weeks ago.

Hi I was wondering if anyone knew of a good internet site that sells wooden playstands or jungle gyms.... relatively cheap? Please message me if you do. Thanks Robert

Post edited by: Jaco1007, at: 2008/05/26 05:15

I named my Congo African Grey, Jaco. It is French (people speak French in the Democratic Republic of the Congo). It means "grey bird" in French.

Hi My 7 month old CAG, Jaco, "dislikes" the water as well. I live in Arizona (hot desert) so I can roll the cage outside and gently shower him with a special nozzle for the hose. He kinda screeches and "hides" in one corner. But I take the lead of an earlier post by the member "hveusnthbrige"... "Deal with it." It's also how I clean his cage from the bird poop (with the blaster setting). His reward is sitting in the warm sun, watching the wild birdies, and people watching while the cage dries. He loves that part. He doesn't get irritated afterwards, nor does he bite. So, I am hoping this turns into a weekly event where he will like it. P.S. Anyone else in Tucson, AZ???????
