1. Keena is really not liking that chain and lock. She spends a lot of time rattling it and turning it around and around. I can almost see her thinking "Hmmm ... now how do I get this off?" LOL Innocent looking right?

Post edited by: BarbPA, at: 2009/01/09 00:59
2. But I didn't realize how smart! I haven't been here in a while but had to share this with all of you. I'm sure you won't be as surprised as I was by this. Twice in the past few weeks, I've walked into the computer room where Keenas cage is and found the door to the cage open. Once She was actually out and sitting on my computer chair. The first time it happened I thought maybe I hadn't latched the door properly. It has a latch that is supposed to be *parrot-proof* so I figured it was my mistake. The second time I was positive I'd latched it since I'd been paying more attention to it since her first escape. Today I'm cleaning the bathroom and can hear her playing around in the cage. All of a sudden she stops talking and everything gets very quiet. Like a child, you have to worry when she's quiet! LOL I tiptoe into the hall and peek into the computer room where I see her working the latch. She's very focused and doesn't see me looking in the doorway. I'm sure if she'd seen me she would have stopped immediately. After she opens the latch she climbs down to bottom of the cage and pushes the door open. She is just ready to hop out when I stepped into the room. She stops in her tracks and says "Whoa". That's what she always says if she's being bad or if I tell her to stop banging her dishes. That's how smart she is - she even knows when to use certain words. So now I have a small length of chain fastened with a luggage lock on the cage door. Hopefully that'll keep her contained.
3. Thank you for the warm welcome! A little background on Keena. My aunt got her when she was 8 months old so we've known each other a long time already. The difference is that my aunt, who's now a little older, hasn't really worked with Keena the past few years and I plan on getting her used to being handled and let out of her cage. Honestly I think my aunt was a little afraid of Keena after a little nip. Me, I've been bitten by just about everything, dogs, cats, a horse, chipmunk, pecked by other birds etc, so I'm not afraid. Not that I like to be bitten but I know it happens. On the other hand I don't want to rush it and make her fearful of me. She won't step up totally. She'll put one foot and most of her weight up but just won't lift that other foot off the perch. I work with her a few times a day. Do you think I'm pushing her too much too soon?
4. Hello everyone! I just found this forum and hope to learn a lot here. I just got my grey, a 26 year old female named Keena. Even though she's not a baby, she's very familiar with me since she used to belong to my aunt who got her at 8 months old. My aunt is getting older and has always said she wanted me to have Keena when she passed on and decided to give her to me now. Keena is still adjusting to her new home here with us and our three chihuahuas. She's used to dogs since my aunt has two large ones but I think my little dogs have her a bit confused! She just looks at them and then at me as if to say "what exactly are those things?". It's so comical. I'm sure I'll be visiting a lot for advice and tips.
