  1. Adds up quick dosent it. Just spoke with the embassy. The final verdict is in. No birds are allowed into Costa Rica due to the risks of avian flu. I'll have to just enjoy the birds down there, we even have our own private aviary at our rental house with a few parrots in it!
  2. The quarantine on the return trip is 30 days in home according to the link.
  3. Bosco's in a plexiglass cage and cant get to the lock =) It works great!
  4. Bosco says SHHHHHHHHHHH when I have the tv on past his 7pm bed time. I have to turn the volume down a notch to get him to stop shushing me. Somehow he learned to shush me from me shushing him all the time, which actualy works. I thought about getting a little 20" flat panel tv for his cage so he could watch Animal Planet HD while I'm gone during the day to keep him company. I do leave the radio on all day for him.
  5. It's happend to me a few times and blood gets all over the place. The first time was very upsetting for everyone. I was in full panic mode. I scoured the internet and quickly found the advice to pinch the toe to stop the blood flow. That did NOT work. I could not get it to coagulate. So I called my mom who's a nurse and she said she'd be right over with Steptic Sticks. They look like long wooden match sticks but the tip has something on it that reacts with the mucous in the tissue and chemicaly seal the wound by simply touching it to it. It worked instantly and flawlessly. Apparently they use them on patients to seal wounds like when they pull a feeding tube out of stomach or something. I have a canister full of them now and even take them with me when we travel to the beach and stuff just in case.
  6. I'm going to Costa Rica at the end of the month and want to take Bosco with me. They let you take cats or dogs but there's no info on birds. The Costa Rican consular in DC told me this morning that she thought probably not because of the bird flu scare but she wasnt sure and I should call back tommorrow when someone with more knowledge on the subject would be there. Anyone know the rules?
  7. Heh, I actually thought of that too Dan. I checked around the room and there is no way he can see me. So how's he pickin up on my yawns?
  8. My CAG is a picker. I've tried, sprays, vets, aloe, bathing, you name it. The only thing I havent tried is the collar. I've heard that the collar will keep them from picking but when you take it off they go right back to picking. I think it's alot like biting your fingernails. It's also a way to deal with stress. Mostly it's seperation anxiety stress. Anyway over the years I've just come to accept it and love my bird all the same with or without feathers but there will always be a part of me that wants to curve this behavior. Keep trying, maybe with enough minds working together we can figure this thing out.
  9. How does body language play a part in this situation. I dont see how you are making a connection with body language when absolutely no body language can be read visually or communicated to the bird because the bird is in the other room. Plain and simple the bird cannot see me. How is this possible?
  10. A few years ago I saw the show that featured Nkisi and Sheldrakes studies. It was absolutely amazing. I am still intrigued by the abilities of Nkisi and very suprised there has been no more about it in recent years since then. But what really got me back on this subject is my 4 year old grey Bosco. It just started a few weeks ago. When I get the feeling of a yawn coming on and I start to yawn, Bosco makes the sound of me yawning. Put yourself in my shoes. Your lying there on the couch watching TV and you start to yawn. Your mouth stretches wide open and you slowly and silently draw in air. Right at that moment you hear something from the other room. It's your pet grey and it's making a yawning a sound. Your bird cant see you and you cant see your bird. You get up off the couch and go into the other room and look at your bird and wonder, how the hell did you know I was yawning. Are you making fun of me or just having fun with me. How did you do it? This has happened 10 times in the past few weeks. What triggers Bosco to yawn when I yawn, when there is no visual or audible communication going on here?
