It has been some time since I posted.Things are wonderful Julio my 21 year old grey that came to be my baby in Jan is doing wonderfully. He has always taken up real well with me talks up a storm and likes to ride around on my arm but I never have been able to get him to step up until just recently usually i leaned my shoulder to his cage and he would step ono it .. We have worked on the step up for quite sometime and he started steping up finally last week.He loves giving cuddles and kisses and he seems to really adore getting his pic taken. He is so funny he will step up and crawl on to my shoulder for a hug and usually when i give him a hig he knows he is gonna get a smooch so he makes the kiss sound he is too cute. Cosmo is doing wonderful as well has seemed to really taken up with my 12 yr old over anyone else in the home. New news is at the beginning of July we will be brining home our first B&G macaw he has been dna'd a boy and is 57 days old.. I get daily pics of his development. These guys bring such a joy to my life! You can see new pics of them on my blogspot http://theholderfam.blogspot.com/

Post edited by: Ladybug01976, at: 2008/05/19 20:18

Ok so my grey has decided to be funny and scare me half to death.. So last night it was around 11:00 and the cat was just put out because he wanted some fresh air.. I have two cats.. Well not long after putting the cat out I heard frantic meowing and my other cat was safe and sound asleep on the couch so i knew it wasnt him.. I searched around thinking maybie my other cat had been let back in and was in one of the rooms with the door closed. Come to find out it was Cosmo meowing like a cat.. To funny i thought something was seriously wrong with the cat and it wasnt even the cat haha:laugh:

for the past while i have kept the birds seperate I introduced them to the same room they talk to eachother and imitate eachother but how to i formally introduce them to one another? i see pics of people with their greys sitting side by side but how do i get them to be like that without them hurting eachother i know it will be gradual but there has got to be a way.

I just recently adopted 2 adult african greys one that is 8 and the other that is 20 and my 8 yr old isn't much of a talker but the 20 yr old grey man he imitates and learns new sounds and words daily he is so eager to learn.I think it was the best thing I ever did although I would adore a baby I am more prone to adopting "adult" I think it is all personal preference really.

Has anyone here been owned by a meyers parrot? I was at petco today buying stuff to spoil the birds with and saw a just weaned meyers parrot they were selling i have heard lots of things about buying birds from petco and in my opinion they are overpriced on their birds and stuff but that baby was adorable.. Anyone have experience with them or know someone who breeds them.. What they usually go for weaned etc.. I just fell in love with that lil guy but they wanted $600 for him.

It has been a little over two weeks and we have hit so many major milestones I really thing this guy is very bonded with me and is starting to bond with everyone else. When I first got him he was in bad shape had raw plucked areas.. Was in a cage that was so small he could hardly move and was very cage aggressive. He took up with me right away and pretty much has let me do whatever I want with him though sometimes he puts up a protest he usually gets over it pretty quick. When I got him his diet consisted of seeds and cereal.. He was very lethargic and to be honest I was not sure that he was going to make it.. I handfed him for a week through a suringe 3 times a day and gave him fresh fruits and veggies and he regained back his strength. He refused pellets altogether but now eats them along with a organic diet .. He loves bean sprouts and veggies , greens, and I feed him a natural mix of grains, oats, pellets, and organic fruit and very little seed.I have been the one handling him from day one.. My oldest daughter is scared of birds because my amazon is a one person bird and isn't very nice to anyone but me and has divebombed her a few times and so she has been scared of birds ever since. Well, she has loved cosmo since day one and he has allowed her to pet him and so forth so yesturday I encouraged her to try to get him to step up on her which he reluctently did , and the rest is history she loves him even more now:) He also stepped up on my 3 year old son who is just as gentle as can be.. This bird is just truley amazing he has never bitten me he has acted like he was going to when trying to get him out of his cage but i think that is all a ploy to look like a big bad bird lol.. But he is just as sweet as can be and has really come along great and is just like any other bird. It is hard to believe he was such a neglected bird before. You sure couldn't tell it now.. Here is a slideshow of his milestones. Thanks for letting me share! if so do you have kinda a recipie.. I go to the organic food store and pick up a few things for the birds.. I get some oats, grain and bean sprouts.. I also pick up organic grapes, strawberrys, cantilope and apples. The new guy I got evidently isn't a veggie eater or fruit eater so (i worry he isn't getting enough nutrients) I am having a hard time getting him to eat.. I also would liket o get some kind of organic food mix.. Ideas? recipies? pass em along pics would be great as well:)

Yep julio just had a health with his prior owners vet ,and Cosmo just had a health check by my vet and they both checked out good. But i have them quarintened away from eachother in a room away they can both still hear eachother and they mimic every sound that the other makes.

We drove and brought Julio home tonight he is a sweet boy but not very handleable (hasn't been sexed) but the lady said that he is a very horney bird lol he likes to mate with a stuffed animal like toy in his cage.. Cosmo is a very happy grey I picked up a used hugeeeeeeeeee playstand (I payed $60 I was going to buy the same one brand new for $198.00 so I got a heck of a deal (Of course i thouroughly cleaned it although the guy i bought it from said his bird used it maybie once or twice he just didnt have room for it it is hugeeeeeeeeeeee) and i put him on it and he loved it, he wasn't real happy when it was bed time and i had to get him off of it.He was talking to the new guy and they were both mimicing eachothers sounds. The new guy is 20 years old and he/she is so cute reminds me of a lil duck he is very light for a grey well compared to Cosmo anyhow.. Here are some pics.. This is the new guy Julio And here is Cosmo enjoying his new Playstand and the playstand itself he just loves it

Post edited by: Ladybug01976, at: 2008/02/04 07:59

bringing home another grey that is 20 years old (I am such a softy for the older birds).. We are going to meet him this weekend and bring him home I am excited and after the initial quarentene i think him and Cosmo may end up being the best of friends..This guy belongs to a elderly lady who loves him dearly but has asthma and the dander is causeing her severe respitory problems she raised him from a baby.. Her son contacted me and I am very excited to bring him home.. I told him that i would send cards, pics and emails giving updates on him and he really liked that idea. He said that he is plucked in a few areas which is ok by me because i think they are beautiful plucked or not. I got pics of him last night and he is just as cute as could be! Here are pics..

As i stated from my very first post my new Grey has cage aggression issues once he is in there it is usually hard to get him out.. but once he is out he is fine.. Well the past two days i have kind of let him do his own thing as far as coming out goes .. well when i first got him he would sit on the perch in the very back and not come closer with out freeking out .. I would offer to let him step up and he wouldnt so i left the cage open and said ok mommy will be back and he would step on the perch closest to the door and be like hey you forgot me and then i would offer to let him step up again which he still refused.. Well today i opened his cage and he wanted out but when i offered to let him step up he refused again so I did the same thing left and came back and asked him if he wanted to step up he didnt so as i walked to the door he whistled at me and got out of the cage on his own climbed to the top I asked him to step up and he did without any problems. He was excited for his daily spoon feeding of banana and rice cereal.(I know he is spoiled) He also today when i took a bathroom break I always have him near me whereever I go and I went to the bathroom when i looked around the corner to see that he was ok I couldn't see him then i heard lil click clicks on the floor and looked down and there was my baby on the floor at my feet wanting to step up:) I love him...

Oh yes i did that Friday before I even left collinsville with Cosmo they were supposed to go check her out ..
-
Thank you everyone for making me feel so welcome.. I am totally in love with Cosmo.I am very suprized how fast he is progressing thus far.. He is fine once out of the cage and today for the first time he actually started to somewhat communicate with me .. I told him i loved him and gave him a kiss on the head and said I love you and made a kissing noise well he made that noise back to me it was exciting.I have always wanted an african grey there is just something about them that i love they are just pure gorgous and i saw his beauty from the very begining. He will never have to be cooped up in a cage that is to small, he will never have to worry about not being fed, or being hungry or without water again and he will never have to worry about not getting enough attention .. I just love him to death! He is the bird I have always dreamed about! I feel like a new mama all over again lol He lets me do just about anything with him once h e is out of the cage I already have him spoiled (bad mommy lol) he let me trim him beak and nails.. The were both so long.. His beak was actually so long it was interfering with his eating.. The lady that had him just didn't take care of him.. He is a totally diffrent bird since I brought him home Friday.
-
Hi there yep I payed 400 to get him out of there and would of payed more just to get him away from that lady.. He was in awful conditions. I named him Cosmo. He is 8 years old.. He also let me trim his nails and beak without a problem.. He does have quite a problem getting out of his cage. I have decided after this weekend when he gets his huge kings playstand that he no longer will be in a cage that the playstand will be his new home.. He was kept in a cage far to small for him and it really messed with him emotionally and lack of interaction with him made it worse.. So I will be keeping him cage free. I am having a hard time getting him to eat but have been taking fresh veggies and fruits and making them smooth in a blender and he is starting to eat solids I have also ordered him some Harrisons Bird food to see if he will do ok with that.

For years and years I have always wanted an African grey I posted an add stating what I was looking for.. Since I am a stay at home mom it gives me many opportunity to work with abused and neglected animals i have done dog rescue for a number of years I adopted a blue fronted amazon last Feb. that was as beutiful as can be and had biting lunging issues and was amazed at how quickly I got him over that and he is just the best bird ever now. Now back to my wanting an African grey.. I wrote an add stating what i was looking for that I was a stay at home mom, was looking for an african grey if it had behavioral problems that was ok because I could work with it and get him/her over them. I got a reply from someone who said that they had one that was 8 years old and was looking for a home and they werent asking to much for it. I am always up for a challenge so I said I would come look at it.. Everyone has told me from the start oh you should get one as a baby and so forth . I love babies but I am more into older pets I would rather have an adult dog than a puppy , a cat as opposed to a kitten, an adult bird rather than a baby. So with that being said I went to go look at that bird I pulled up to this house that looked awful from the outside.. Was kinda afraid what it looked like in the inside.. I called the lady on my cell phone and told her I was outfront and a short grouchy man opened the door and let me in I could hear dogs barking little dogs when he let me in it was hidious there were like 12 little dogs running around in this little house newspaper all over the floor and in the next room the kitchen there were cages upon cages of birds at least 15.. I didn't hear happy singing bird chatter i heard the scream of little birds that wanted attention and out of that place.. I observed many bird with no water and only seed for food which isn't appropriate as nutrition .. Then i saw him sitting in a cage far to small and just staring blankly scared out of his mind. I couldn't turn away from him he needed me he had this look of despair in his eyes.. Poor guy had plucked feathers around his neck and he was just shaking.. The lady was trying to get me to buy more of her birds I wish I could of saved them all I really do and I am going to do my best to get them out of that place . The cages looked like they hadn't been cleaned in years it was filthy.. I quickly gave the lady her money took the bird and got the heck out of there. When I got home I got the bird out of his cage which wasn't easy as he was trying to bite me got his cage cleaned up which took about an hour to do gave hom fresh food and clean water. I worked with him alot last night and he is doing much better.. He has an appointment at the vet next week to get his beak trimmed as well as his nails trimmed.. He isn't that beautiful african grey that you always see on animal planet but he will be soon now that he is with me and will be loves so with that said let me introduce him to you and just remember.. There are all types of people and animals in this world they may not be beautiful , they may be short ,fat , tall , toothless, homeless but everyone needs a friend don't turn away from people or animals just because they aren't what you want them to be on the outside because if you dig deep they have an inner beauty that will shine through with a little TLC. Here he is.. http://s70.photobucket.com/albums/i119/ebayseller05/?action=view¤t=Picture052.jpg http://s70.photobucket.com/albums/i119/ebayseller05/?action=view¤t=Picture056-1.jpg http://s70.photobucket.com/albums/i119/ebayseller05/?action=view¤t=Picture006.jpg http://s70.photobucket.com/albums/i119/ebayseller05/?action=view¤t=Picture005.jpg

Post edited by: Ladybug01976, at: 2008/01/28 22:28
