Welcome {Feel-good-000200A2}

Have 4yr old Quaker, who does says couple of phrases, likes to make noises more so. They are know to be pretty loud sometimes though, so as long as you don't mind that.

Give us more, I love parrots

Orange peels is great idea B) Personally I don't use air fresheners unless is in different rooms, because sometimes my other animals make me. Only use small amount so it does not go in there room.
-
My grey is almost two years old, and did the same thing, now it could be just normal at the moment.... If you see red spots, or anything that is red, then you will need to get it checked out, because my grey started to have red around the eyes, and my vet is treating my bird right now and keeping an eye on her.... Just make sure you keep eye on that, and give her showers at least twice week, and give fruit/veggies to eat little bit. Also you can get red palm oil to use on your bird, that helped my bird little bit. Also you can get air filter that might help.

I agree with Judy, whenever its matter of breathing funny, then you need to make vet trip right away. Make sure you vet is good with birds, thats very important, and get your bird seen as soon as you can. If you don't it could get worse.

What do you use to clean your greys cage?
vaya_the_elf replied to vaya_the_elf's topic in The GREY Lounge
Thanks everyone Not sure what I will try.... They all sound pretty good. Do the soapy water thing already, just my bird is very flakey and sensitive so I was trying to find something might work better for her. -
Here is my list... 1. Want to grow old with my husband, and someday own the house we are in. 2. Make differance in the lives of animals, rather it be fostering, or signing something to help animals. Does not matter 3. Let all my animals live happy, healthy lives, and hopefully live out long life as well. 4. To travel, go to Egypt(since wanted to go there seen I was very little), go to Austrila, go to disney world, go to yellowstone national park, hersey PA, see many zoos. 5. To decorate in the bedroom, bird room, kitchen, and living room 6. learn new things each day 7. Do new things... like go in air ballon, and try out scuba driving or snorkling. 8. to see friends and family as much as I can

This is to talk about different things you have used to clean your parrots cage, and also to tell things that did not work for you as well..... For me I use mixture of soapy water, however looking to use something else.

If you have trouble having them eat fruit, one thing I do is add it in something warm like oatmeal, or something like that Quaker is hard to get to eat fruit, been doing that.

Pet insurance for Greys and other parrots?
vaya_the_elf replied to vaya_the_elf's topic in The GREY Lounge
Unfortanly I live in US. AS for your loss I am sorry. It would be hard to spend the money, what I would do is either use that money for your other birds, or donate in honor to her at organization, thats just me. -
Don't believe my birds have..... just wake up at most sounds, never seem to scared about it. Do know they do get scared easy with new things....

Well my birds are in the new room, looking around the summer time to paint there room, since it will be warmer then, and might have time then...

Pet insurance for Greys and other parrots?
vaya_the_elf replied to vaya_the_elf's topic in The GREY Lounge
Never thought of it like that, have thought about saving though. Just if something happens soon, won't have any money due to just moving, so hopefully nothing will happen anytime soon.... Might just save rather then get insurance, unless find one that I trust pretty well. -
There many fruits you can give, as long as she you clean them very well, and don't let them set in the food bowl for to long due to spoiling. My grey loves bananas, grapes, strawberries, oranges, apples, black berries, and water melon. It's best to let them try most of them, not sure if there any fruits that are harmful, I have book at home that I use, its parrot cookbook and it tells what each fruit has in it, and other foods as well. To help you chose better diet. I'll have to find it, for just moved, and put it on this site, its really good book.

Give my grey little cheese every now then, make sure its fresh, and only very small amount, and only every now then.

Thanks, I think I will try to put some up on my profile.B) Hello Fairy *waves*

One thing my vet told me is Quakers can get over weight easily. So just watch for that... I have little bit of issues with mine, he only want to play with his one toy. Brought all kinds of toys, but nothing.

Well as you all know I'm pretty new. I live in the united states with with my husband whom I have been married to less then year, very close to year. Worked with animals since I first started to work, and fell in love with parrots by working at my first jobs at pet stores. Always fell in love with African greys, and the cockatoo's the most, because they showed such personality, however like almost all parrots though. Growing up I was scared of birds due to variety of them attacking me, being able to work with them I picked up on their behavior and now I can hardly find one that does not like me. As little girl I dreamed of working at zoo, taking care of animals. Right now I work at vet clinic as kennel attendant, and am pretty happy with that. Soon I will be moving into a house, which I am very excited about. Have several animals. Two parrots, cat, three lizards, tortoise, turtle, frog, and my 4year old fish. My African grey I have had over year now, she will be two in May. Her name is Evening Star and she is a girl. Hand fed her when she was small little thing and we are very close. She says all kinds of things, including her name and "don't eat me ", "love you", and "thank you" and many more. My other parrot is Quaker. His name is Chip and is believed to be boy, not sure though. He boarded at my work, which we don't normally have birds at all, so he was in the cat room. Poor chip! lol ... His owner did not want him anymore due to lack of time, husband did not like him, and other reasons, I took him in because at work I was the one in charge of taking care of him, and I was thinking of adopting a parrot. He does not like men. My newest addition is my cat Grinch, who is about 9yrs old, he has dental issues. other then that happy kitty and has to be on soft foods only. Got him from my work as well, had had been there over a year. My passion is animals, helping them any way I can. Might be fostering another cat that has diabetes. Other things I enjoy is movies, books, computer/video games, scrape booking, fencing, history, and going to new places. Sorry to write so much. And hello to everyone!!!!!B)

Yes, that is it. Worry about everything I use, my grey is very senitive compared to other parrots. She has had some eye issues, so working on that with her, and taking her to the vet every few months to watch it closely, however my vet said I was doing every right, so hopefully its just something small. I know PVC pipes are good, what other things are safe to use?

Judy, will make post in the welcome thread *smiles* As for being good idea it is. I work at Vet clinic as kennel attendant, and I see how much stuff is all the time, so its good idea for most pets. I have cat as well that I thought about getting it for just for emergency needs. -
Lately I have decided that I want good pet insurance for my two parrots. Since they both pretty young, its good idea since I will have them for so long. Like one thats pretty good, and will let me use my vet I have now. If anyone knows of good insurances for parrots let me know. Also please feel free to talk about anything related to this
