hi all , update on max plucking , he still doing it , lost a few more feathers , i still say its from the visit to the vet when the vet accidently cut his toe , as we have not changed anything as i said in the earlier post , he is great otherwise , been using aloa vera juice to mist him also got a spray called anti pec spray , which we use every day , he now has like grey/white needles growing , are these new feathers , if so how long before they fully develop , thats if max lets them , what about molting , how old is a grey when it first molts , or does it depend on the conditions it lives in. many thanks for the help dave

hi all , read a couple of articles regarding bionaire warm mist humidifiers , i was thinking of getting one as with me having the heating on nearly all the time in my home , i was thinking that this could be the cause of my grey starting to pluck , with the air being so dry , anyway , was about to purchase a bionaire humidifier when i seen this: this humidifier contains TEFLON which is dangerous to pet birds, 31 May 2007 By A. Souren "Angelina Souren" - See all my reviews According to the instruction manual that came with the humidifier, this humidifier contains teflon. Teflon is a special compound that is high in fluorine and has a number of remarkable characteristics. It can, for instance, be very useful in trace metal work in a lab, and is able to withstand higher temperatures. It is showing up in more and more household appliances, such as heaters and hair dryers, not just in cooking utensils. When overheated, and sometimes during first use of the appliance, it releases toxic fumes that will very quickly kill pet birds. Birds almost never survive teflon toxicosis. (Apparently, some may have been saved by immediate application of steroids, but most birds die too soon to make it to the veterinarian.) I had ordered this humidifier to help with a pet bird's breathing problems. As soon as I saw it contained teflon, it became a useless piece of junk. The risk associated with teflon is unacceptable to anyone with pet birds. I am quite disappointed, but I am grateful the manufacturer listed its use of teflon in the manual. so have now decided against buying this type of humidifier , anyone know of a humidifer that i could buy . many thanks dave

hi zazoo , have you tried the suggestions on the forum , they may help you , ive bought a spray for max and also aloe vera juice , i spray him daily with the anti pek spray and im going to spray him twice weekly with the alo vera juice and see how it goes , i have been using the anti pek spray for 5 days now , but he still plucking away , suppose it takes time , also we bought max a couple of new toys to keep him occupied while we are not talking or have him out his cage. good luck dave

yep , thats why i dont let max out with the jacks , as i know what they are capable of , even though they sit by his cage and sniff and wait for him to drop food , dont think i will be letting him out with the dogs. dave

yep max is in a room with all the family and can see all of us , so there is always someone in the room chatting to him . have you any pics of the dogs and parrots together , love to see them , would not trust my 2 jack russel terriers , even though they sit by the cage waiting for max to throw food out to them , dont think im ready to let them be out in the same room. cheers dave

thanks for the replies , we do have lots of toys for max in his cage which he loves, i would love to leave him out , but unfortunately we have a couple of cats and dogs running around and also 2 green cheeked conures that need to be let out , so we can only manage a couple times out a day , but he seems happy enough. dave

hi all , just wandering how often and for how long do you let your greys/birds out of their cages , the reason i ask is we let our grey out twice a day for over 30 mins each time , was wandering if this was enough as we have other pets to consider and could not possibly leave max out of his cage . dave

Post edited by: mrmacca, at: 2008/01/01 21:36

cheers judygram , we got max some spray called anti-pek spray that we have to use once a day , he doesnt like it very much , but as long as it makes him stop plucking then i dont mind the screaching , also we got him a drop for his water called bogena multi-vit and that also is to help prevent feather plucking , so will keep you posted on how max is doing. dave

max says hello when he first sets eyes on you and when you walk out the room he keeps wolf whistling and screaming hello till you answer him .and you know when he wants anything because as soon as you walk in the room with food he jumps to the front of his cage and keeps saying hello there till you give him something
