  1. We haven't been on the site here for several months-the all knowing internet filter at work has been blocking. Anyway, for several days Petey has been a little quiet, appetite a little down, and "fluffing" up alot more. He's 8 months old, and is used to lots of activity, noise and a variety of good food. His stool looks normal, no respiratory distress noted. Just less "reactive" I've been on vacation this past week, so instead of 12 hours sleep, he's getting @8-10. Less play time because we're running around more (he's by himself more this week). Normally you can't leave the room without some sort of response from him--whistling, chirping, mumbling in his little high pitch voice. All the vocalizing has been cut by 90%. We're probably being too worrisome. Can all this be caused by these changes in his routine, or does anyone here have some other thoughts??? Thanks for any feedback here. Oh, he was seen be an avian vet several weeks ago, and checked out fine.

    Pete

Sorry for the long delay in following up. We chose the pet shop bird. His name is Pete and he is doing just great. We had to keep him in a relatively small cage while awaiting the big one. Just as he got over the new cage anxiety, we had to start all over. But he has adjusted without problem. He's extremely social. He quickly warms up to new faces in the house (frequent). Whistles that could pierce stone walls. In a small voice he either says no or hello. He makes that loud clucking sound when he wants attention. We're working out his food preferences (thanks to all the great info on this site). Getting a bird was my idea, but my wife (a house rabbit person) has gone crazy over Pete. She sits and talks to him, scratches his neck and head--the rabbits are getting green with envy about now. I know this is the honeymoon, and issues will pop up. But off to a good start anyway. I'm sure I'll have questions as time goes on.
  3. I joined/posted several days ago, and thought I would make it official. I am an ER nurse, and about 10 years ago, I saw a visitor in the waiting room sit down while holding onto a small cage. She took out a conure, placed it on her shoulder, and began to read a book. What a magnet. She told me about her bird, and how much it meant to her. I was really moved, and knew, someday,,,, My wife and I have 4 house rabbits. While picking up some hay and pellets, I spied this young grey. That was about a month ago, and it's been downhill ever since. After much research, and thought, We're ready. We'll pick him up Tuesday. This site has been a treasure trove of info. Thanks.
  4. I've been lurking here for weeks, and learned alot. A quick question. I'm looking for my first grey. A local pet store (not a chain) has a young male. He seems to be even tempered when I visit. No obvious problems, and the price is right. We've known the manager for years regarding our other pets, and trust her. A local avian vet has referred me to a person who wishs to rehome her female. Price is the same. She reports the bird is one year old, talks, very friendly, rarely nips, and very healthy-- And followed by the vet. I know choosing a bird can be very subjective, but do you see any negative issues, in either case? Thanks for your opinions. I just registered here, so I'll share more later (more time).
