  1. I have a pet Quaker. Opie is just at a year old. To sum up the little green pickle's personality, "Napoleon". He hates everyone but me, thinks he is 6 feet tall and is fearless. He is not territorial about his cage as many are, but is definitely a one person bird. It has taken a surprisingly short time for him to learn to play nice on the playpen with my sun conure and eclectus. He is a wonderful little fellow and very loyal to me. He also enjoys eating whatever we are having for dinner and will try anything. I wish you the best with yours.
  2. I too have a baby grey and I was also afraid of the bite because of his size. I started with a Quaker too. My quaker has never bitten me, but bites everyone else in the family. My grey is 6 months old and does bite down, but does not understand that he can hurt. His bite is to "hold on" to me and he does not realize that he has the ability to hurt. We have been working on "gentle" for 3 months now and he seems to understand. His "holding on" to a finger is much more relaxed now and playing is also more gentle. The only time he has actually delivered a real bite was while he was toweled at the vet. He was very frightened. I think the babies just have to discover how hard is too hard and that is something they can be taught. As you work with your baby, you will develop more confidence in yourself too. You will also learn quickly what the baby is capable of and what you can expect. Then you will be more relaxed and so will your baby. Greys are awesome!!!
  3. Thank you for this feedback. I have several kinds of food. What does the larvae look like? I just dumped the 25 lb. bag into a container and sifted through it several times and don't see anything that looks like worms or larve and actually not one moth flew out so I'm thinking it's one of the other bags of food. I will keep looking through the others...
  4. Well, this will teach me to post without reviewing everything in here. Wow, great suggestions. I will try these and hope for the best. Thanks!!!
  5. Another question. I buy food in bulk for all my birds and now I have moths. As annoying as they are, I just want to get rid of them. We live in Florida, so I don't want to put their food outside because of all the bugs. If I keep their food in one of those big storage containers like you keep Christmas decorations in, will the moths in the food die (if it's airtight) and then if I can kill all the ones in the house, will that take care of the problem or do I need to do something else. I hate to throw out $60 in food if I don't have to.
  6. Thank you all for your comments. I had Sparky at the vet yesterday for his check up and he was 320 grams. I said oh no, he lost weight and the vet said he had a full crop when he was weighed upon admittance to the hospital so he is even smaller than I thought. She said his split keel was looking awesome. I thought he would have a scar or bald spot where it split but you can't even see it now. I am not worried though, about his weight anymore as it looks like they range quite a bit in size from all the comments. I love the uniqueness of his cute little toes and nails. Reminds me of a cat with white boots I once had. I will get some pics of my whole flock posted as soon as possible. I have to go clean house right now as my Dad has company coming over. He lives with me now since his stroke 2 years ago. He is now blind and in a wheelchair. I must be the nurturing type as everyone from husband to kids are so needy!!! Bye for now.
  7. He was DNA'd as a male. I am trying to figure out how to get these pictures from my phone to here. I emailed them to myself but they haven't come through yet. As soon as they do, I will post them. Thanks.
  8. Oh my gosh, they are soooo cute! Well, I really wasn't implying that he was a hybrid because of his toes, but because of his size. When I look at him next to other CAGS, he is about half their size. Kind of like the runt, maybe. But he is real easy to handle because he is so small and light. And just a big cuddly baby right now, so of course, I wouldn't trade him for the world. Thanks for your information.
  9. Thanks so much for responding. I bought a 25 lb. bag of food and I guess they must have been in it. If I put it in the freezer, will it kill the moths?
  10. My grey has some white toes and nails. This is really unusual, I think. Has anyone else seen this in a CAG. He is quite small, 378 grams, but all of his feather colors are that of a CAG. Someone suggested maybe he was a product of a CAG and a Timenha. Any thoughts?
  11. My name is Sue and I am relatively new to the parrot world. My husband surprised me by giving me a quaker as a thank you for all that I do. This was about a year ago. Needless to say, they are like potatoe chips, "you can't have just one". I now have 8 birds, 1 grey, 1 eclectus, 1 sun conure, 1 jenday conure, 2 quakers, 1 parakeet and 1 cockatiel. I am crazy about all of my birds and love them dearly. My grey recently split his keel and he had to have surgery to close the wound. He has done great and is pretty much healed, but I learned never to leave him up high with clipped wings as they are incredibly clumsy. I am also going to leave him full flighted in the future. I was wondering, does anyone know if painting the inside of a house with a latex wall paint would be harmful to birds. I'm talking about the fumes. One other question. For the first time, I have tiny moths flying around, I presume from either the food or bedding. Any tips on how to get rid of them?
