Hi everyone,
I am a new member and wanted to say hi and tell you about me. I have been around parrots all my life, My grandparents raised and showed prize winning budgies back in the 50's and 60's and of course I had a budgie. Later when I was married I had a couple budgies and then in 98 got my first large parrot -an congo grey names Ashes. Ashes is a very talented talker and a great bird(though she can be feisty at times!) She had none of the problems that I often read
African greys had and has grown to be a very confident bird that loves everyone(especially favors my hubby though) and is a fabulous flying machine. After her we got a blue and gold macaw and fell in love with the macaws as well. At the tiem we lived in the Chicago area and have since moved to Gainesville, Florida. Here we have managed to rehome 6 more birds, 3 blue and gold macaws, one greenwing and most recently a scarlet. Last March i got a call from a woman who had an african grey that she had rescued two years earlier from a neglectful, possible abusive situation. She had worked with the bird for 2 years, apparently with a lot of phobias, bumblefoot and malnutrition but was now in a long term situation that required her to be away many hours a day several days a week and wanted me to take him in. He is wonderful. He had come a long way apparently because he has been the sweetest and most gentle bird imagineable. He has never bitten me or used bad language(apparently traits he had previously) and really bonded to me. He is not comfortable around strangers like Ashes is and has a mighty mean growl, and he is still a bir fearful of left arms(he won't step up and is very nervous) but is learning to fly much better(at first he crashed into things) and has really blossomed. He and Ashes are starting to interact finally. Up until recently they just sort of watched each other.
I live in the country and have besides my parrots, 5 german shepherds and 9 goats. And a pond with koi and a tropical fish aquarium, that the birds love to watch. I hope to learn new things and to share some of my knowledge with the group. I am currently learning and working on foraging trees and toys. We have an outdoor aviary for macaws and one for the greys, as well as a big birdroom. They all love their playtime outside. Good to be here . sorry if this is so long.
