  1. He seems to be doing ok. The bleeding has stopped. He seems to be licking the inside of his beak, but I figure that would be normal. As far as the wings being clipped, when I inherited him he had no wing or tail feathers at all. Now he has some wing and tail feathers, but i dont think enogh to even give him a soft landing. We take him out almost daily, once in a while he will make a jump for it. This is the first time it resulted in an injury. Thanks again for the quick replies and help. His name is Kenworth.
  2. thanks for the quick replies, thats what i figured, but the wife is freaking out..mike
  3. My adult grey just jumped off his perch, and cracked his beak, its at the tip. it is bleeding. we applied some corn starch to stop bleeding. what should i do. vet is not an option at the moment, we are in the middle of an ice storm..
  4. since i last posted, we have taken the advice of taking Kenworth out more during the day, he is out about 6-10 hrs a day, he has taken to my wife, she can get him to step up pretty much at will, once in a while he will be moody and not want to be bothered. he is still eating well, and shredding most of his toys. still quite the talker, however he knows some profanity. all seems to be going well, he seems to have eased up on the feather plucking. i have found great info on this board and elswhere so i dont have any questions at the moment, just wanted to keep you all posted, great community...
  5. thanks for the help folks, poor Kenworth has been through a lot the last couple years, but havent we all. we will keep giving him attention and letting him out more.. i need to get some perches so he can hang out in different rooms..he is quite vocal both whistling and talking..also he does this bobbing type thing when my daughter is around, looks like he is dancing, i assume this is a good sign..
  6. kenworth is about 10, my sister raised him for the first 8 years and spent a lot of time with him, she passed away 2 years ago, and her fiance' has been taking care of him for the last 2 years. he works 10 hour days and isnt able to spen much time with him..he started plucking shortly after my sisters death.i guess he had plucked many years ago, but she got him to stop.for the last 2 years he has spen the day alone with a cockateil and the tv. now he has 2 people around most the day plus the cockateil..i believe his wings are clipped, or plucked. he doesnt have many full feathers except around his head, otherwise he is mostly covered in the down like feathers..as far as molting, how would i tell, would he lose many feathers at once or just continually over a period..
  7. well its been a week since Kenworth joined us. he seems to be eating well, and is pretty active. he is quite the talker in the morning, i was very surprised at how much he says, and how clear it is..we have been letting him out for about an hour twice a day. he will step up for my wife most of the time. my only concern is the feather plucking, when he arrived he only had 2 red tail feathers, and his breast and wing feathers look more down like. he seems to preen himself alot, but there isnt a lot of feathers on the bottom of the cage, and the ones that are there are little fluufy down ones. he doesnt have many wing feathers either. how can i tell if in fact he is plucking feathers, and what can i do to prevent it.also how long would it take to regrow the feathers, cause he doesnt look very good at the moment, but he seems to be acting pretty good.. he gets a lot of attention from my wife and daughter. i have been poking around the net trying to find out as much as possible to give this guy the best possible care, any tips or comments would be greatly appreciated..
  8. thanks all, i have been browsing around and learning. yesterday we opened the cage and Kenworth came out, climbed up top, then my wife got him to sit on her arm. he didnt want to come out today. he has been eating well, and been talking durring the day. he tells the cockateil to be quet, and makes a knock knock noise and says who is it, or come in. these were my sisters babies, her fiance' hated to give them up, but he is concerned for the welfare of the birds.. i do have some questions which i will be posting, great forum, great community...
  9. hi all, i just inherited a 10-12 yr old african grey, and a cockateil. both birds were owned by my sister for about 8-10 years, then she passed away 2 years ago. her fiance' had been taking care of them for last 2 years, however he is not home for most of the day, and can not give the birds the attention they need, the african grey had started plucking his feathers. he brought the birds and cages over sunday, now the poor things have gone from being alone all day to having 2 adults, a teenager, a west highland terrier and cat around. we have the birds in an enclosed porch. havent had much experience with birds other than parakeets, but i have experience with reptiles, and the commitment needed to keep them. so far he has been eating and playing with his toys, i let him out last night, i just opened the cage and let him climb out onto the floor, then he hopped up on my hand and i put him on the top of the cage, where he hung out for a while then climbed back into the cage on his own..this morning he started talking. i assume these are good signs. is there anything special i should or shouldnt be doing, for the situation i am in, i figure the poor guy has got to be pretty freaked out.
