Annoyed

Hello Shaun and welcome. First, please don't put the responsibility on us for whether you sell your Grey or not. You've had him 6 six years and that did not develop overnight. There is not an "Instant" cure for biting and all parrots for the most part will bite at some point. It is your responsibility to have learned his body language and eyes pinning to avoid the bite. Yes, they are tricky, sly and FAST and sometimes we don't see it coming quick enough. But, we do learn their "moves" like putting the head down for a scratch and then the minute you touch the head they flip the head around and clamp down. Greys are known for this and we have all learned that move and are prepared to move our hand before they bite most times. You say you were "Playing" with your Grey. Well, they can get too excited just like us depending on how you are playing and perhaps in that moment of excitement you pissed him off and BAM, he bit you. I have done this before and knew I got my bird too excited. My fault, not his. Your Grey is fully mature and an adult. They become much more reserved and aloof when that old. It is also molting season and mating season. So you have multiple factors playing into this that spell biting incidents at a high level of probability, especially with hormones raging kicking in. Since you have already basically stated he is up for sale. I would suggest finding a loving parrot person with experience that would be will to take in this Grey and give it a home that is willing to work with time and patience to at least slow the biting down or just learn to avoid those situations so they no longer take place. The important thing, is to find a loving and good home for him. Not the first 700 offered by some inexperienced person that does not know what they are getting in to. I wish the best for your Grey.

Post edited by: danmcq, at: 2009/12/20 13:47

SWEATERS

One note on best friends sanctuary. It is primarily for dogs and cats, not birds. I am moving this thread out of this room. This room is for new members introducing themselves.
6. Dee - I am in California. Just person that needs little sleep. It's 4am here.
7. It sounds like you had a rough night Dee. It's great to hear Juno is at least stable and not deteriorating. That is very hopeful. I pray baby Juno well heal quickly and completely this time.

Post edited by: danmcq, at: 2009/12/19 13:01
8. Cool Thread and topic Bernie. Thanks for starting this. :-) Do you have proof we haven't been visited? ;-)
9. Yes Jill, he is trying to tell you something. Don't you see the blue lights on the bottom of the UFO outside the window? Thanks for sharing this photo of Harvey studying to become the next Ufologist. I understand the "Large Greys" communicate in a very complicated whistling language we humans just have never "Cracked". :-)

Post edited by: danmcq, at: 2009/12/19 12:47
10. Well, I went and found the site and the article on making the "Sock Sweaters". They lost me instruction wise at: "On the collar you can K1P1 or K2P2 whatever you feel like It is just go give it some stretch. " Guess I will stick to the Aloe Juice, Red Palm Oil and keeping my birdy flighted. Being a "Guy". I was thinking a "Full Body Cast" would stop the plucking as well. Easy for a guy to do to. 1) Mix plaster. 2) Dip bird in plaster. 3) Stick some Toys into the plaster before drying. 4) Blow dry until plaster is solid. The bird will also make a good book rest if needed when your in a spot.... ;-)
11. Woooooo Hooooooo!! GreYt idea Penny!!! It feels like a Birthday already.... Lets party all you F>A>R>T and S>P>E>W members!!!! B) :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:
12. That is terrible news Dee. Juno is in my thoughts and prayers. I hope the new antibiotics get him cured of whatever the underlying issue is. Poor baby and you. I know how you must feel and empathize with you.
13. LOL!! I love it. Now that is really some impressive flight control t oland without dumping it over. :-) Thanks for the GreYt photos and story.
14. Jealousy is definitely displayed in parrots. You may have the answer right there. :-) Dayo is jealous of Jake and when I or Kim try to spend even the slightest time or attention to Jake. Dayo will come flying and try to shoo Jake away. If we ignore Dayo and try to spend a little time after Dayo's attempts to stop us. he will go bonkers and fly like a demon, go beat and tear things up and go to forbidden places that he knows we will immediately come and retrieve him from. That just may be the true underlying case here. If so, the only way to handle that is too have different times they are in there cages and your interacting with a certain parrot(s). Once the one on one interactions are finished. They could perhaps all be let out to enjoy "Open" time when no one is getting one on one time Perhaps. Jealousy is a very powerful and destructive emotion in us all.

She speaks!!!

They choose what they wish to say first and also which sounds that appeal to them and they wish to produce themselves. You would probably be surprised at what words and sounds she mumbles and practices out of earshot. You will continue to hear things that will just pop out as time progresses. But, in the beginning it's is slow compared to a year down the road when it seems like they can pick up a phrase in a day or two or a new sound. :-)

Post edited by: danmcq, at: 2009/12/18 16:10
16. Axl sounds like a wonderful Grey and his photo shows a beauty of a Grey. :-) The way he has let you step him up, hold him and give scratches is really a positive sign that he likes being out and close for now. The lack of attention leaves a hole that needs to be filled. The biting can be addressed by watching body language and if eyes are pining. You'll learn this very quickly. Looking forward to hearing updates on him. :-)
17. Thanks for the official introduction. :-) It's so heartwarming to hear when they are taken in start start to blossom and know love once again. :-) Thanks for sharing this.
18. Happy Hatchday Rikki. You have sure blossomed under mommies care and turned into such a beatiful grey. :-) I love the new drawer you were given to have your way with. Some nice furnishings in there and your good to go.
19. Penny - If anyone has a cure all for destructive behaviour in parrots. I would sure like to know it. If course this would preclude the thought of clipping or leaving them in them in the cage, for me. I have as you have probably seen in some of Dayo's videos hanging toys and play areas everywhere. he and Jake both enjoy them, bat the hell out of them and get what seems to be angry with them. BUT: It's that forbidden fruit, the feel, taste and just the enticing thought of maybe being able to get another taste or bite that just drives them loony. They will go to get it, you will retrieve them or shoo them off. The cycle will continue forever and it may even slow a little. But, it is life with a parrot. Clipping can slow them down a little and stop the from reaching some places only reached by flight. But, they will just get there a little more slowly or turn to other "Forbidden Fruit" they find with in reach. I suppose the only cure all is to have "Scary" items they dislike placed everywhere that forbidden fruit is. Wish I had an answer, but don't.

Post edited by: danmcq, at: 2009/12/18 15:43
20. Good link Sheila. Thanks for posting it. :-)
21. What a remarkable difference you have made in Simba's life. He is obviously blossoming under your loving care. :-) Thanks for the link to all the before and after photos. Karma for taking in a grey that just needed a loving home.
22. TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS, HE LIVED ALL ALONE, IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE MADE OF PLASTER AND STONE. I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE, AND TO SEE JUST WHO IN THIS HOME DID LIVE. I LOOKED ALL ABOUT, A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE, NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS, NOT EVEN A TREE. NO STOCKING BY MANTLE, JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND, ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES OF FAR DISTANT LANDS. WITH MEDALS AND BADGES, AWARDS OF ALL KINDS, A SOBER THOUGHT CAME THROUGH MY MIND. FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT, IT WAS DARK AND DREARY, I FOUND THE HOME OF A SOLDIER, ONCE I COULD SEE CLEARLY. THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING, SILENT, ALONE, CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME. THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE, THE ROOM IN SUCH DISORDER, NOT HOW I PICTURED A UNITED STATES SOLDIER. WAS THIS THE HERO OF WHOM I'D JUST READ? CURLED UP ON A PONCHO, THE FLOOR FOR A BED? I REALIZED THE FAMILIES THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT, OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT. SOON ROUND THE WORLD, THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY, AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY. THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR, BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS, LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE. I COULDN'T HELP WONDER HOW MANY LAY ALONE, ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME. THE VERY THOUGHT BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE, I DROPPED TO MY KNEES AND STARTED TO CRY. THE SOLDIER AWAKENED AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE, 'SANTA DON'T CRY, THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE; I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM, I DON'T ASK FOR MORE, MY LIFE IS MY GOD, MY! COUNTRY, MY CORPS.' THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP, I COULDN'T CONTROL IT, I CONTINUED TO WEEP. I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS, SO SILENT AND STILL AND WE BOTH SHIVERED FROM THE COLD NIGHT'S CHILL. I DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE ON THAT COLD, DARK, NIGHT, THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR SO WILLING TO FIGHT. THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER, WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE, WHISPERED, 'CARRY ON SANTA, IT'S CHRISTMAS DAY, ALL IS SECURE.' ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH, AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT. 'MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND,! AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT.' This poem was written by a Marine.

She speaks!!!

Congratulations!! That first word or phrase is always very exciting. :-) She will calibrate the words and voice until she is fully pleased with how well it matches the source. This is done by practicing over and over and over....and breaking down a phrase and saying the individual words is also normal. As she learns more words and gets the full meaning of "Each" word. YOu will find she will start creating her own new phrases and normally in the right context. But, thats down the road. :-) Looking forward to more updates on this new speech ability.
24. Happy Hatchday Harvey!! My how the time has flown. I know your parronts will shower you with gifts and forgive for shredding whatever you wish in the house on this special day. Enjoy YOUR day and be extra cautious in shredding things like blinds. If you cut too many of the strings, they could fall on you. So bite one in half and fly away quickly. If the blinds didn't fall. Bite another and another and so on. Always ensuring you fly away at each snip. When your all done, you parronts will have a super Hatchday present for you and special snacks to celebrate.
