  1. Actually I do, I have an 11 year old and a 3 year old. Do you plan to introduce your grand kids to your grey in the future? I know a bite can draw blood, specially a small child. It's something I have taken into consideration. I also have dragons and I'm careful with the kids around them even though they're not prone to bites.
  2. i have a 11 year old and a 3 year old. I want a grey, I'm interested but I would like more information or experience on introducing your grey to children. I wold never leave them unsupervised EVER, but I would like my bird to be able to fly and move around the room in which we are freely when we are home. I am concerned with biting children. I think it was yahoo that I read someone said their grey would actually launch at her and her children.. I understand that is possible but I also believe that any animal can launch at anyone and do some damage. My children have been taught to respect others (including animals), no shaking of the cage, picking at them, things like that would be tolerated. I also know that greys tend to bond with who ever they want .. how would people go about introducing them to children in safe matter for both the grey and child?
  3. Thank you! I will looking into both avian rescues and breeders ..
  4. I'm still debating on getting a grey and this is what I needed to read! I want all the info, the good, the bad and the ugly before i make my life long commitment. I will definitely pay more attention to the issues that are posted and hopefully learn something from them.
  5. I introduced myself and I do not have a grey yet .. haven't even picked one out, or put a hold on one. I don't even know if I will go through with it yet .. Still doing my own research. My question is what do you look for when you're getting a baby grey? I don't even know if there are any breeders in the bay area, CA. What about having one shipped? is it safe? What does DNA test tell you (is it just for gender?) What diseases should you test for? Are they normally tested for by breeders? Health guarantees should be how long? - do they offer health guarantees? What about rescued greys? How do you know you're getting the right one for your family? I would be interested in raising my own but would love to offer my home to rescue as well but I would be worried about prior bad behavior and ways to correct it. Basically what is it you look for when you bring a new grey into your home? or what should I look for before just going on a whim, I don't want to just buy one because he/she in my price range but I would like to buy one that I know has been handled, and is healthy (those are the two most important things for now).
  6. .. I won't wait that long but planning on it within the next 6 months or so. I think that will give enough time to know what I'm getting into, get a set up ready, find a good vet, rearrange my house to be more safe, and what not.
  7. Thank you everyone! I know life expectancy is very long, I also understand that the time dedicated will be a lot. I will try to absorb as much as I can, at least that's the plan. Since I was a little child I have wanted a grey, I've had budgies and I'm sure it is a completely different experience and I may be in no way prepared now for a grey right now. I do not rehome and that is not an option regardless of circumstances, I wouldn't put my children in foster homes, or give them up for adoption and I believe the same thing about my other babies. I wouldn't be closed to the idea of adopting an older grey either. Right now I'm a sponge, just absorbing everything I can, I have time to make my decision, I will never bring one into my family while I'm not ready! So for right now the information hunting is underway!
  8. Hello everyone! I'm new here, I do not yet own a grey and honestly I'm trying to figure out if one would be a good match for me and my family. I'm very interested in learning as much as I can about them, before I impulse buy a life long companion. I have been researching online, checking out informational you tube videos and some which are just cute and funny. I figured the best way to learn, and make a decision is to lurk around here and read some of the issues, concerns, stories that actual owners share and I hope that is okay. I plan to ask question and involve myself in this community so when I do or if I do decide to go ahead and bring a grey into my family I'll have a little knowledge under my belt. Well just wanted to say Hi!
