  1. thank you. I should have mentioned that it is a giant, i mean enormous E-collar. She can not reach her head at all. We as parronts have to go all the head scratching
  2. Hello All, Our Grey Kira, who is currently wearing a collar due to plucking and significantly injury to herself has two red dots above her eye. It looks like a rash. Does anyone have any idea what this might be? We will likely contact a vet tomorrow. thanks Aron
  3. that is just for kira, bella is slightly less expensive. certainly not inexpensive, but it is insurance, the what if!!
  4. VPI insurance. we have had it for 3 years and have always gotten back more than the full premium because of our clumsy birds. it has been very worthwhile, as our cockatiel, bella, one ate a plant that sent her into a little shock and the bill was 1500 plus and we got back 900. kira once needed some surgery which cost 900 and we got back 600
  5. We have always gone to avian certified vets, but there are still some that i prefer. we have both birds fully insured which eases the costs, but we all know that they are not inexpensive members of the family!!
  6. UPDATE Kira appears to be using her full beak, though she is not fully restored to her usual chomping. i made an appt to see the vet next week. did not want to rush to see just any avian vet, as there are plenty of not such great one's and only a few great ones around here. hope to get the full medical thumbs up next week but she is looking better each day thanks all
  7. kira appears to be using her beak a little more today, but is still favoring the side to chew. if this continues in a day or two i will have her seen by the vet thanks again everyone
  8. thanks again. we will monitor her closely tomorrow Aron
  9. Our grey kira loves to destroy pens. we often buy a box of inexpensive pens, pull out the ink then place them in a "special" container. the more we tell kira not to touch them, the harder she works to destroy them. this can keep her busy for days on end
  10. For all of you who were great the last time i posted, thank you very much. here is a quick update about kira and then i will ask another question. kira's feather actually molted out very quickly. i think this is because there was not enough cover around it, as she has still not molted the quills from the three primary feathers around the identified one. as i result i do not believe that this feather has developed the support to grow straight. kira is molting these quills now and hopefully she will continue to grow her wings. now here is the question. for the first time ever, kira is favoring the side of her beak, only chewing off to the side. this is strange for her. it happened a little after supper tonight. my wife things that maybe kira bruised her beak she fell a little. this happens on occassion when she is startled. there does not appear to be any breakage and she can put pressure. she did crack a few snacks. my wife will be home with her tomorrow and will monitor kira, but any advice will be most welcomes thanks in advance and i apologize for not posting more regularly
  11. the feather continues to grow as if nothing happened. we monitor her closely as usual. right now she has her neck flipped back to have me scratch her crop
  12. Update. Kira is looking very good today. Eating and playing like nothing happened. We will continue to monitor her closely though. Thanks for all the information and i will continue to post Aron
  13. i believe Kira is 4 years old and she has lived with us for about 3 years. We adopted her from a home that could not care for her any longer. Mixing up her toys regularly, using hiddy boxes for treats has been most effective. she was once collared for a long period because she did significant damage to hersef, but that is nothing that we will do again unless there is a strong medical necessity. The vet did collar her a few months ago against our wishes and we removed it when she got home. environmental changes set kira off, as does initial plucking. once she starts, she can not stop. thanks
  14. Thank you for the information. We do have the "emergency" plan for both of our birds. the travel cages are already to go and depending on the day, or time of day there are two different places we can go. thanks again, and will keep people posted
  15. thank you for the immediate feedback. the bleeding feather is only about 1 inch long so i imagine it is still quite weak. also, kira is a terrible plucker and does not have alot of protection on her wings as a results. she certainly has made much larger leaps than this one without incident. must have been the way she landed. i will continue to monitor the bleeding or any changes in her demeanor. i will call a vet, we continue to struggle to find someone we really like in Mass.
  16. If the bleeding has stopped is there still a need to have it pulled. there has been no active bleeding in hours? My concern is not the cost of a vet rather the trauma of having feathers pulled. kira is deathly scared of the vets office as she has required a considerable amount of care
  17. Our Congo Kira flew down (about 2 feet) today when she got scared. when i picked her up there was a small flow of blood. I quickly stopped the bleeding with the corn startch and light pressure. She has 2 new blood feathers growing in. there is no active bleeding. i can not see if there is a break in the shaft or if the blood came through the bottom of the feather. i would appreciate any advice people could offer thanks in advance Aron
