  1. Some will go thru a major molt where you will see the pinfeathers and they might look ragged and some may only go thru a partial molt that won't be as noticeable. The clipping won't have any effect on the molt. Why don't you post a picture of Janis so we can see what she looks like?
  2. Since I only have two parrots I don't have much of a problem and one of them spends most of the time on my shoulder, Josey is usually on one of her playstands but for short periods of time she shares one of my shoulders while I watch some TV. They don't get along but as long as I keep each on separate sides then all is fine, sometimes Sunny tries to sneak over to Josey's side but the hand comes up to separate them and she goes back to her "corner" :cheer:
  3. A "slight trim" won't solve the problem, they can still gain height outside if startled, especially if there is any breeze blowing, others here will attest to that fact. A bird that is clipped you would presume to not be able to fly but they can and do when something scares them into it. I would go with putting screens on the windows you plan to open, that way you have the fresh air without the risk of your bird getting out.
  4. This is a pic of the back of the house that shows the outside aviary where the conures can go outside from a window but the day we were there the window was closed with the A/C on. <br><br>Post edited by: judygram, at: 2009/07/01 03:54
  5. Some of these pics I took of the african grey aviary were taken thru the plastic side and don't look very clear but you get the idea: Sheryl Covie with Charlie, a permanent resident who has severe arthritis
  6. I went to visit the project perry sanctuary in Louisa, VA on Saturday and I must say I was impressed with the facilities. I was welcomed by Matt Smith, who lives in the house where some of the birds reside. There was the garage area that has been turned into a conure room and another room next to it was a macaw room. Both of these rooms have high ceilings and were outfitted with tree branches for them to climb around on, the tile floors were covered with broken coconut shells. The african grey aviary was very impressive, a long metal structure that allows them to fly from one end to another with all kinds of plants and flowers growing inside, non-toxic of course, that must be so much like what they would experience in their native habitat. They were all in the end covered with plastic that they would be closed up in the wintertime to be heated, giant fans kept the enclosure air moving. We were not allowed to go inside the aviary but was not really disappointed because I knew it was in the best interest of the greys to keep them undisturbed as possible. I believe most of these greys are former breeder birds who come from different places to live out their remaining lives in the harmony of others like them. There was one grey who was in the process of being rehomed as were other birds. Some of the birds inside the house were available for adoption and they have strict guidelines they follow in order for a person to acquire one of the birds in their care. There were other buildings where different species of birds were housed, some of these were not for adoption with some coming from homes where they were treated very poorly or suffered from some injury that made them poor candidates for adoption. Sheryl Covie showed us around, I took a friend and there were others who came as they take a group on a first visit and she knew the birds well, she told us the stories of a lot of the birds that were housed there and some of them were horrible to hear, it amazes me how some people can be so cruel and/or ignorant. I really enjoyed my visit, I volunteered for a couple of hours by feeding and watering some of the birds, they go solely by donations and I hope to talk the bird club I belong to come for a visit as a group and maybe make a donation to help them along with their project. These people really care about these birds and it shows in how they are taken care of. Here are some pictures I took to share with you all: If you look closely you can find some of the greys. <br><br>Post edited by: judygram, at: 2009/07/01 03:55
  7. I haven't looked at the link your provided Shanlung for I would be so sick at what I saw but there is a lot of sick people in this world and it no longer shocks me what they will do. I am torn between whether we are helping or not, damned if we do and damned if we don't.
  8. I hope your partner is not stroking his back, under the wings and the tail area when he is feeling horny as that will only further frustrate him. You have only had him for 4 weeks, that is not enough time for him to learn to love you yet, give him some time, he may never feel about you like he does for your partner but it can be good for you both.
  9. Hello Misslea77 and welcome to our family, we are so glad you could join us and we look forward to hearing more about you and your grey, at least I assume it is a grey. So your parrot loves your partner more, well we have heard that story before many times and it is not much you can do if he has chosen someone other than you for his favorite. That doesn't mean you can't have a good relationship with him, just not like the one with your partner. Greys choose who their favorites are and you will just have to learn to live with it, you can be the one to give treats, that will endear your self somewhat to him. You will find lots of useful information in our many threads so do read thru them at your leisure and do ask questions you may have and we will help you in any way we can. We love pictures here so if you have any of your grey please share some with us, btw, what is your grey's name and how old is he?
  10. Thanks so much Bernie, yeah don't worry so much about the full moon ones, I can wait until wintertime when you can get some good ones, thanks for sharing your passion with us, some of us can only dream.

Take a read thru this thread on handfeeding, it has lots of information for you in it, might answer your questions. http://www.greyforums.net/forums/the-nursery/73409-handfeeding-a-baby-grey.html
  12. That is so cute, they are so pretty but I love to look at them and not own one, definitely out of my league but thanks for sharing a pic of one with us.
  13. No you wouldn't Davey but if you call first then I will welcome you with open arms, hows that.
  14. Yes you must, I have to see this to believe it but like Dan I am picturing it in my mind:woohoo:
  15. Diane, read thru this link for instructions on posting pics, this is what a lot of us use. http://www.greyforums.net/forums/photography-room/89533-how-to-post-picturesphoto-tuturial.html
  16. Why don't you read thru this thread about wing clipping before you commit to clipping your baby's wings, it will take up to a year for them to grow out again. http://www.greyforums.net/forums/the-grey-lounge/25408-the-african-grey-to-clip-or-not-to-clip.html#25408 But if you choose to clip make sure it is done correctly by someone who knows how, maybe your avian vet for if it is too severe he will fall like a rock instead of gliding. There are things like clingys you can put on windows and doors with lots of glass that will let him know he can't fly thru it.<br><br>Post edited by: judygram, at: 2009/06/30 17:17
