Hello all,
I am new to Grey's, but not birds. I have owned birds my whole life, up until about 5 years ago with the passing of Angel, who was 23, the green quaker parrot. I still miss him. But I am considering getting a Congo Grey some time in the future. I want to learn more about these birds and what the community who values their happiness does to maintain happy, healthy, loved birds.
I have had quakers, blue and gold macaws, budgies, and conures. Some when I was a young child. I've always had a fascination with them. I was sad to see my two blue and Golds have to be rehomed. I had gotten them from a breeder, hand fed them, and loved them. I lived with my parents then and the reason I had gotten 2 was that my had said she wanted one too. This was a mistake. She wasn't ready to buy a second cage or anything. I kept both birds for about a year. Letting them out whenever I was home. I was in college and I also worked at walmart. They were outgrowing the cage I had had for them, for one it was fine, but two it wasn't going to cut it. My mom had previously agreed to give them attention and care initially, but this didn't happen. Luckily a friend of the family decided to add them to her avian collection. She has a whole room dedicated to her birds, super large cages, and even an outdoor flying area that is fenced and covered. I still see pictures of them, but it's still not the same. I do feel better that they have a home that I couldn't provide, and loads of attention, toys and a great diet.
I am living with my fiance now in VA with his parents. We are looking for a home, and once we are settled, and provided there is ample room/safeties for a bird, I would like to find a Grey. Joining this forum would allow me to learn from others what works for them and generate more options. I am very confident in my ability to have a Grey as a member of the family. Not only with my past experience, but my desire to continually learn for their benefit. I also have a Master's degree in Psychology, so training should be a little more simple. I work with children who have special needs as a profession, so I believe I have the love and patience as well.
Anyway, much too much from me, so I'll end by saying "Hi!"
