  1. I do not know if it was because it was the 4th Wednesday of the month, the moon and the stars aligned in a certain way, or the ambient temperature was a warm 86 degrees with 17% humidity in the house but Joey surprised us yet again...I was taking care of Jay and Joey had flown over to Salsa's cage to see what was going on...Joey going into Salsa's cage is reason enough to go wow since it took him over 10 years to even approach and enter the cage... When he realized what we were doing was not something he was really interested in, he ventured further into the cage and began to play with Salsa's toys and bell!!! Who are YOU and what did you do with Joe? Hahahahaha! All this was happening while Salsa was sitting on my shoulder, staring at Joey and whining.....Maggie

  3. Sterling Gris no longer trusts me; I hope he will get over it, but he is a very spooked grey; he always has been so I'm sure it will take awhile for him to forgive me. Ana Grey and Sophie are just fine. They are mellow parrots and go with the flow. Thanks for asking Jayd. th

  4. It is so interesting! He is actually a she, according to the vet! So she watches me endlessly and if I sit down in my chair next to the cage, she will move onto the gate protecting her cage. This puts her very close to me! Slowly she inches her way closer to me, especially if I pretend like I don’t see her!!! She tops about 1 foot from me, puffs up, pulls one leg under and takes a nap! I can not move closer to her yet but I can talk to her. I’m on Grey time now!!!!

  6. Hey all, I renewed the license and upgraded the software core. Unfortunately, the skin folks had a change in management, and my lifetime membership seems to have gone by the wayside. It looks like the skin is compatible with the major upgrade, but you might find a glitch here and there. Let me know, the license is good through Oct 2018 Thanks guys and keep up the good work.

  12. Thanks everyone. As an update. Sterling Gris, who is a scaredy cat now fears me. I hope he gets over it, but he looks at me as if I am going to destroy him. I have thought hard about what happened and how the inside of my home looked covered in smoke. My fear was my birds were choking on smoke and I had to save them. I do not regret what I did, my only thoughts were to get my birds into carriers and into fresh air and I did it. They are all fine and if Sterling Gris can't forgive me at least he is alive. Pissed off but alive.

  13. I know I've already commented but I wanted to add: if Sterling-Gris makes a habit of it, you may consider talking to a vet about using Haloperidol to settle him down for a while. I've mentioned it here before but I'll repeat it - our new bird, Huey has an abused past and when he gets stressed he will tear the scales off his feet and keep at it until they're bleeding and eventually would lead to putting him down. It's a nuerotic behavior he gets into and once it starts the only way to stop him is dosing him with Haloperidol. It settles him right down. The vet put our Huey on 3 drops morning and night which he was on for I don't know how many years. When we got him I was determined to get him off the meds. He went 1.5 months and then one morning I went out to the aviary to get him and his feet were bloody. He got cold and paniced and went after his feet. So back to 3 drops and I'm slowly weaning him down to zero. It's just a thought, I hate meds as much or more as the next guy but I've seen how it can stop a neurosis on the spot and helps the bird to settle and then off his meds.

  15. If he steps up from the floor i t`s just a mater of time and he will step up from any place. Remember grey time is slow motion and they need to build a relationship with you. It sounds like they had a good life in their old home so I believe this will continue with you. Good Luck

  24. Find his treat he can't live without! Then use it to condition him to step up. It's not like he doesn't know how, he just needs to redirect his thought processes.

  31. A friend sliced a pool noodle to fit the top of her doors to prevent them closing on little fingers, I wonder if this is something you could put on the top of open cupboard doors for a landing place and your grey could chew on that perhaps. Also, Home Depot carries a vinyl flooring called Allure which could be fitted over the plywood to make cleanup a little easier and it has a really hard backing on it which might withstand attempts to chew it. It comes in 6 inch strips and is easy to handle.

  32. OK you have a wood butcher or what can be called a normal African Grey. You have been given some good ideas when it comes to the butchering your cabinets. One word of caution.!!! When your Grey is on top of your cabinets make sure they are not perched on a open cabinet door before you close them. My Corky loves to be high so we have to check and make sure she is not perched on a open door, any door in your house !!

  33. Wow what a great idea! Never thought to put tiles there..my birds live my cabinets. I buy the wooden houses for rabbits and put them on top of my cupboards, they mostly chew them.

  34. I'm not sure about the plywood, but it doesn't sound like a great idea so I'd err on the side of caution and do something else. Have you tiled up there yet?

  35. It's a bedroom window that used to open to the outside. We just close the window and put the blinds down, but that doesn't stop them from knocking incessantly when they know you're in there.

  36. The trick is to find something else that your grey likes to destroy. I had a similar problem with Alfie when he discovered the shelves in the living room. He threw everything off the shelves then started chewing them/pulling them apart. I discovered that he loved to destroy cardboard boxes so I found some that fit perfectly on the shelves. Now, when I let him out, I clear all my things off the shelves and leave a few cardboard boxes and toys up there for him. He will happily sit and shred the boxes for hours and leaves the shelf well alone. The chewing is a natural behaviour- you just need to find a way to redirect it to a more desirable object if you can. (e.g boxes, old bits of paper, telephone directories... anything he can chew and shred) Depending on your cabinet- is it possible to tile the tops of them? One of my colleagues also has a grey who loves sitting on the top of the cabinets- so they put tiles on top. Can't be chewed and are also wipe clean! He also fills the space with various toys and boxes to keep his grey busy/distracted.

  37. I have had my greys since they were weaned and they are not chewers and love to sit on boings that I have in each room of my home. If your grey is a chewer, give him something else to chew on. When he perches give him a nut, treat, etc. to chew on.

  38. I have never had problems with plucking.... until now. Background. Sterling Gris, is a nine year old CAG that has lived with me since he was weaned. In fact I finished his weaning at home. He is a big guy easily twice as big of my 11 year old TAG, Ana Grey. He has always been a scaredy cat. He is afraid of anyone but me. Well.... Last Sunday I was making mash for the birds and had just put the pot of mixed dried beans on the stove when my neighbor called and asked me to go shopping with her. i said yes and quickly changed my lounge clothes to going out clothes and dashed out the door. Had a great three hour time with dinner included. But has we were almost home she got a call from her son asking when we would be home and he was told we had just gotten off the highway and were almost home. We knew something was wrong..... When we got out of the pick-up we could hear the alarms going off in my home and I dashed to the front door and my neighbor was on the cellphone calling the fire department. Her son dashed into my house and started opening windows. I moved the burned pot of beans, turned off my stove burner and rushed to the bird room to get my parrots and canary out of the smoke filled house. I keep bird carriers in the bird room and just grabbed the parrots and put them in carriers and rushed everyone out the door. After the smoke cleared out I put everyone back in the cages and all was fine I thought..... The next morning I was leery that something might be wrong. Fearing I might find cages of dead parrots, I was grateful they were all alive BUT Sterling Gris had plucked all of his chest feathers off. I was devastated but it could have been worse (I keep telling myself), he is alive, they were all alive and hopefully Sterling's feathers will grow back. (Thank you Dave, I have re-read your post on plucking. I still miss you, Dr. Flock). I'm too old for this kind of excitement in my life! Ana Grey, Sophie and Moe (canary) were not phased at all.
