Rio is molting and biting both of us HELP!!!

Our baby Rio has grown and now he is 9months old. He is going through his first molt. We understand that it is stressful for him and we try to be as compassionate as possible.

Problem is he keeps biting us and when he bites he drawes blood. Sometimes he goes into tantrum and flies about, bites, runs from us, shouts... Basically behaves bad.

We want our bird to be friendly with everyone. But at the moment we we cant make him be friendly with us.

He hasn't bonded with either of us and he likes/dislikes both of us equaly.

Can someone tell what to do and not to do...

We tried taping the bird on his beak as a sort of punishment (we have been told that by the breeder) but I have read somewhere that its verry bad to do so and we stopped.

We try to punish him by putting him in his cage for a breather, but that only makes things worse as he understands he is being naughty and he is going to be put in the cage he does not like it, that makes him run away and bite even more

What to do when he bites?????

Deep breath and lets start over, allow Rio some space and choices in what he does. Punishment is not the answer you are loosing his trust rather than earning it. Please read about Gilbert she has her own thread that has been growing as her trust grows I think it may give you some valuable insight into how a grey processes our behavior and it will definitely give you direction to build that necessary trust. Go slow don't push.

Good luck to you and Rio. Definitely focus on positive reinforcement, choices, space, calm, and as much love "good vibes" as possible. Grey time is slow, but you can and will build trust if you keep at it and move according to his timetable. It took several months for my grey to bond to me, but it did happen and we are very very close now. Don't get discouraged, and feel free to come here and vent.
