A couple of days ago I was watching the BBC World News on TV and noticed that the news anchor, as well as several UK officials featured in some of the stories, were wearing these red pins on their coats. They looked like a red apple with a green leaf.

This really got my curiosity up as to what the pins represent, and I thought maybe some UK folk here could shed some light?

Yes, that's it! Thanks.

I figured it must be something like that.

Poppies are also worn to commemorate war dead in the U.S., but it's done on Memorial Day in May. Also, the poppies look different.

In New Zealand, the poppy is worn on ANZAC day, which is April 25, to commemorate the landing of the combined forces of Australia and New Zealand at Gallipoli in 1915, when Gallipoli was still in the hands of the Turks.
