How to tell if a Cockatiel has been inbred too much? All 'tiels "have a bare spot" under their "tiel" the larger the bare spot, the more they have been inbred

They are 2 weeks old. These chicks were abandoned by their biological parents (Lutino pair) when they were hatched. Their parents refused to feed them. The 1st 3 chicks died. When these 2 chicks were hatched, I placed them with another pair, Opel and Audi. These 2 are proven very good breeding pair.

Opel and Audi are very kind hearted. They accepted them and raised them like their own. They are now raising 3 Lutino chicks. The 3rd chick is not in the pic.

We would also have a Naming contest. Hammy and Pretty-mama has given us Cinnamon, White-faced Pied, pied and pearls.
Our cockatiel was a sort of 'surrender' - my husband's mother is one of those people who sees someone else get something and immediately wants it as well. When we took her to the bird store to meet Marden before he was weaned (we were staying with her taking care of her at that point), she immediately said "I want a bird!" and of course my husband obliged by getting her a cockatiel with all the accessories (cage, play stand, etc.). Maks was older than Mar by several months and long since weaned so he got to come home after a couple days of "cage training." I don't know if this made him territorial or what, but since then he's been VERY aggressive towards the Greys. I keep wishing we'd have left him at the store and brought them all home together but of course I cannot change the past. Of course, once the newness wore off, and once she realized birds are a lot of WORK (unlike her pet rats that got left in a cage until she felt like playing with them) she told me "I'm just not a bird person." Maks had already decided that being ignored on a perch while she played on the computer was less fun that riding my shoulder while I worked, so he'd bonded to me anyway. I've come to love him as much as any of the other babies.

Recently, we have all moved to a new home (in another state) and they all arrived at the same time. I thought perhaps this would be an end to the 'territorial' thing, but no such luck. I think it is too late now for that to have an effect on his attitude.

I am not talking just hissing and posturing. He will fly clear across a room to swoop down and literally attack them when they are minding their own business. They are many times his size - especially Mar, who is nearly 500g. I don't know if he's got some kind of death wish or what.

Does anyone else have a cockatiel with this kind of attitude? Is this normal? I have tried every animal (and child) technique to modify this behavior with no success. Any suggestions? Tips?

We are planning a very large aviary for the birds to allow them to fly somewhat freely, while still remaining protected from aerial predators. I am not sure how this will work if he's going to chase down the Greys and pounce on them.

I welcome any advice!

Willie is my 22 year old + cockatiel who has been with us all his life.

My wife and I were just talking the other day about how we have had cockatiels in our life for over 41 years and that Willie has been with us for over 1/2 those years.

How we got Willie.

One day I was at a F.W Woolworth store picking up some things for the wife and I stopped by the pet section like I always did. At that time we had 5 cockatiels so I was not there to buy one. (just look)

There was this young male that came over to me and it let me scratch his head. At that point in time a lady came over and said, It`s to bad that every bird in that cage will be dead in six months and than she walked away.

That little tiel came home me and I had to explain to the wife why we needed another cockatiel

Well that little cockatiel lasted longer than six months and my wife loves that tiel more than you will ever know.

We just lost a sweet pied tiel back about a month or two that was only 8 years old and with Willies age we know that the time is coming when our house may no longer have a cockatiel in it unless we get one soon.

As many of you know, Piper came to us with one wing clipped severely and the other not. It has been 8 months, and I see no sign of any flight feathers growing. Could it be possible that it is just deformed and not clipped? Or if it was clipped, wouldn't it have grown out by now?

He won't let me hold his wing for inspection, so it is only a visual I have.

I just wanted to post an update on what I once thought would be my first cockatiel. Piper has been with us for 9 months now. He has quite the big personality, big temper and has no problem letting you know what he wants and when. He has a way of communicationg those things to you that my other parrots don't even come close to.

Well 9 months later and he still hates me. I have accepted the fact that he probably will never like me, and that's okay with me. Ihave no idea why he feels as he does, but I have come to terms with it with no sadness on my part. After all, those of us that have parrots clearly understand that you can't force a bond or love, or a like on them.

Anytime I go near him to change his water and give fresh food or snacks, or to close up his cage at night and cover him for bed, he hisses and spits at me, I actually find it very amusing and giggle when he does.

He adores my daughter, I told her he is HER bird and although I do the daily care, she cleans his cage and spends time with him. She brings him to the ou ter and shares her breakfast with him. When I walk by, he hides next to the potty basket as though I can't see him....) My youngest son and my daughters boyfriend has been accepted into the Piper I Like You Club, they can handle him and he is fine with them.

Another cute the g he does, is every time he hears my daughter opening the garage door as sheis driving up the driveway, he screams until she comes inside and says hi to him.....I don't know how he knows it's her, but he does....incredibly smart!!!!

Okay, just wanted to share the update........I don't need another bird, I am at my max, probably a bit over with 6 birds, working 3 jobs and the dogs and cats and kids.....but the way I see it, is I made the commitment, and I owe it to them all to make it work and provide them with the best care I can and spend the most time I can with them, and it is working for now!

Piper loves to stick his head in a small mug shaped toy in his cage and whistle in it daily.

Tonight he was with my daughter on the couch, he stuck his head between her toes and whistled so loud for about 10 minutes. It was so funny!

Little One is a re homed female pied cockatiel that has been with us for about 8 years or so.

My wife and I have had cockatiels for the better part of 41 years and most of them were re homes.

I worked for a school system for over 31 years and everyone new of me and my birds because I would bring them to school to show the kids and tell them about my birds and their origin.

One day I got a call from a fellow worker who asked me if I wanted another cockatiel and told me a story of how came about to have this bird.

He was home one Sunday sitting in a chair outside next to his garage when a lady came up his driveway and said your bird is out.

Don told the lady that he did not have a bird, that he had cats. The lady than went over to Don`s wife who was also out side and said your bird is out and is on the peak of your garage.

Don looked up and saw this cockatiel at the peak of his garage. He walked over to his garage by the gutter and said, Hay dummy come here and the bird ran down the roof of the garage and jumped on to his hand.

Don went to the police station ,pet shops and vets and reported this lost bird. He had no way of keeping this bird so he asked me if I would take care of it until some one claimed it and I said yes.

Its been over 8 years and no one has come for her so I think she belongs to me.

She is a very sweet lovable tiel and they can`t have her back now.

Tonight, my daughter and I were watching tv, all the birds were in bed, and covered. We leave Piper covered only 3 sides of his cage cause he hates it! He started barking like my little Bichon who is a yippy little bugger. He barked and barked for a very long time, had us both suprised and laughing! That was a first for him!!

Soooo smart! But still hates me.......oh well, I laugh about it, here I wanted a cockatiel so badly, and it doesn't want anything from me but FOOD! And I better share when I eat breakfast, or he yells at me.....lol

I wanted to share a picture of Piper. He is doing great! He still won't step up to anyone and runs away if you put your hand near him, but I do have him eating toast in the morning from my fingers if I stand there long enough.

He has an incredible personality and has no problem letting you know what he wants and when he wants it. He is like a little Nilah. Love to see him hiss at me...he's harmless compared to Nilah!

He ABSOLUTELY adores my daughter. I am the care taker, she is the sweet best friend of hers. He will go to her when he desires, sit on her shoulder or arm and hang out with her. So be it,......one day, he may take a liking to me, although he loves the attention he gets from me, and when he wants it, he WILL let you know! We very much are adoring him.

If you have a cockatiel than you know about Night fright.

If your cockatiel is having a night fright it is best to turn on a light and talk to it softly to calm

it down.

The top 8 causes for cockatiel Night Fright

1. Nocturnal animals and insects flitting about in the darkness

2. A draft or sudden stream of cool air

3. Cats and dogs moving around and suddenly meowing or barking close by.

4. Shadows moving over the cage or aviary.

5. Thunder and lightning.

6. Fire works.

7. Flashing lights, Such those from car headlights.

8. Member of the household coming in late after everyone else is in bed.

9. There are also reports of cockatiels thrashing about in their cage just moments before an earthquake.

8 Cockatiel Night Fright Prevention Tips

1. Do not "plunge" cockatiels into complete darkness at night, provied them with a dimmed lighting.

2. Give cockatiels some food or a regular treat 30 minutes before the lights are dimmed. It gives them something to look foward to at the end of the evening, rather than dread the approach of night.

3. Do not cover the cage completely with a black-out cloth. A covering on 3 sides and partially over the top can provide security but still enables them to view their surroundings.

4. A baby monitor placed near to the cage and linked to the bedroom can give you peace of mind by alerting you to a problem quickly so that you can attend to your cockatiel immediately and defuse the situation.

5. Do not move the cockatiels cage to a unfamiliar location at night.

6. If your cockatiel is being introduced to a new cage or toy, do it at the beginning of the day, so it has maximum daylight hours to become accustomed to it

7. Ensure that the curtains in the room are properly closed so the light from passing cars don`t spook your pet bird.

8. Ensure that your cockatiel is getting adequate sleep and is housed in a peaceful environment.

There are many parrot and parrot type birds that are kept as pets around the world and the cockatiel is one of the popular small parrots kept as a pet.

Many new bird lovers may start out with canaries or finches and parakeets all who make great companions.

A parakeet may spark the interest in having a larger parrot as a pet or companion, but a parakeet and a african grey or a amazon are worlds apart when it comes to living with them and having them as a companion or pet.

In many cases that first cockatiel is the next step into having a larger parrot of any species.

I started out with a parakeet and I have had them on and off many times over the years and they are a great companion.

It was a little over 40 years ago when the first cockatiel came into my life and to this day I still have tiels and have never been with out one in all these years.

It was the cockatiel that lead me to whear I am today with my fids

I still have two cockatiels, Willie a male normal grey tiel and little One a female pied tiel along with Corky a CAG and Cricket a BFA all because of that next step a cockatiel.

Mutations, Last Post

This will be my last thread on this subject. The point I was trying to make was: Any two "tiels can produce wonderful combination. Our Hammy,[Orange-cheek] and Pretty Mama,[Cinnamon] gave us, a White-faced-Lutino, a Cinnamon-Pied, and a Fawn. Each clutch they gave us assorted babys.

I mentioned in other threads that a male cockatiel inherits one X chromosome from his

father (let's call this chromosome "X1") and the other from his mother ("X2").

Each of these chromosomes can carry sex-linked mutations. The sex-linked

mutations that a male inherits from his father will occupy X1, and the ones he

gets from his mother will occupy X2. The important thing to remember here is

that the mutations on each X chromosome are always inherited together.

The mutations on X1 will travel together to the next generation (likewise for

the ones on X2).

Let's say that a lutino male and a cinnamon pearl female have one male chick.

One of the chick's X chromosomes (call it "X1") will carry lutino (from his

father), and the other ("X2") will carry cinnamon and pearl (from his mother):

X1: lutino

X2: cinnamon pearl

If this male is mated to a grey female, these are the possible results:

Male chicks:

50% grey split to cinnamon pearl (if they inherit X2)

50% grey split to lutino (if they inherit X1)

Female chicks:

50% cinnamon pearl (if they inherit X2)

50% lutino (if they inherit X1)

Note: It is not possible for any of the female chicks to be just pearl, just

cinnamon, or lutino pearl. She is limited to the combination of mutations on the

single X chromosome she inherits.

A sex-linked mutation is one that is carried on one of the sex

chromosomes. When dealing with sex-linked mutations in birds, it is important to

note that humans' and birds' sex chromosomes do not work in the same way. While

a human female is homozygous (which means that she has two copies of the same

sex chromosome -- "XX") and a male human is heterozygous ("XY"), it is the other

way around in birds; female birds are heterozygous, and males are homozygous.

This means that females can have only one copy of a sex-linked mutation (the

mutation is carried on the X chromosome), and it follows that females cannot be

split to a sex-linked mutation. If a female does not visually possess the

sex-linked trait, she does not carry it at all.

A dominant mutation needs only to be present

in one copy of a gene to change a bird's appearance. Normal grey is dominant to all recessive and sex-linked colors. The two true dominant mutations are dominant silver and dominant yellow-cheek. A bird with one dominant silver gene will appear silver, and is called a single-factor bird. A cockatiel with two copies of the gene is called a double-factor. The two forms can be told apart visually; a double-factor is much paler than a single-factor

(think of the double-factor as having inherited a double dose of melanin reduction). Yellow-cheek is inherited in the same way as dominant silver, but single-factor and double-factor birds cannot be visually told apart.

A recessive mutation must affect both copies of a gene in order to change the bird's appearance; a visually Whiteface cockatiel must have inherited a copy of the "Whiteface" gene from each of its parents. A bird that possesses only one copy of a recessive gene is called a split, and will pass that mutation on to half of its offspring. Most splits will not show any sign of the hidden mutation, although cockatiels that are split to pied will often have a patch of

yellow feathers on the backs of their necks.
