A little back ground on these two. Mary Anne is the scarlet who was in a cage with Oliver and who is who picked him bald. Now Oliver, in return, picked her also but as bad since she actually has a head full of feathers and several that could come in on her body, she just picks them out. She is 14.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-ie7OzNtVD1I/VNeolAvnOSI/AAAAAAAABEs/ZwwJFfrEf3I/w326-h579-no/20150208_121640.jpg

She is a mans bird and that did worry us, we have heard stories about how she chases feet and won't stay on a stand bites and is just mean. So far none of that. She let me get her out of the cage yesterday, I put her on the stand and other that falling off of it on accident and listening to me when I told her she needed to get back up, it wasn't floor time yet but that she would get it soon, and then letting me help her back up she has been great. She has let me touch every part of her and I even got to groom some of her tail feathers. She use to get her tail tapped or jerked on so her letting me touch her tail was exciting.

Marley is the military, I met her when she was just a baby who was starving because the owner had no idea how to feed. She was eventually taken to a breeder to finish the weaning. She has never learned to step up, because I was told she didn't want to force her to do something she didn't want to do. OR maybe she was scared of Marley and since she didn't spend time with her anyway, just never taught her. Marley though is smart as crap at 1 year old. In just a few simple training moments, she will come to me and hit a target. She refused to go back in her cage but last night on our 3rd target training, I had her coming down to the door perch so I could close it and she could eat. Awesome. She does have a few weird ticks, first one is that she hangs from a toe on top of the cage, even to sleep. The second one is she opens her beak very wide, sticks out her tongue and licks your fingers. Not sure at all what that is. lol

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-3ewYJRAws_0/VNgVLgOvLYI/AAAAAAAABFk/R8zmX8A5e8k/w326-h579-no/20150208_170550.jpg

These two did not come from a happy home, lots of yelling and the f work is used in almost every sentence. Just bringing them to our house, they wore large welding gloves if that paints a picture of the fear they had of them. It is a big shock to them to get to be out with everyone and hear laughing. We joke because its like the Kevin Bacon, 7 degrees. Almost half of our birds have crossed paths somewhere in their past.

I should say, Marley's name is actually Harley but I tend to say my Harley and it comes out Marley and since we are not fans of the name Harley for her, it seemed natural to just go with it. lol Mary Anne's name was Mary Anne before she moved in with the neighbor, but since it was her husbands old girlfriends name, they called her Little Girl. She is now Mary Anne again and responds to with much more ease than little girl. She use to say Mary Anne but I have not heard it in years, I hope it comes back to her.

If I didn't have hold of his foot I am not sure if he would have made it anywhere or crashed to the floor. I was shocked and my first thought was he was falling but then I saw where his attempt had taken my arm and realized it was a flight attempt. It is kind of exciting but then I say, OMG, he is trying to fly. Hard enough having my flying cotton balls, now a big macaw. My days are numbered here. I was told it would be soon that we will be bringing in 2 more B&G's and they are fully flighted, 1-2 months is his goal. Old man will also be coming in a few months, but he is too old and just sits there and is very quiet. I told Pat he was quiet and he reminded me that of who lives with us now, we were told at least 4 of them were unusually quiet and they are our loudest, so not to be expecting it to last.

Greenwing Macaw smelly poop

I have spoken to some of the experts in the bird world and was told that macaws especially greenwings have smelly poop around this time of the year or should i say spring time. Is anyone else experiencing this with there birds.

I did take mine to the vet and he put him on antibiotics and told me to offer yogurt.

Would like to hear others opinions please

Well, I did it! I just put a deposit down on a 3.5 month old Miligold Macaw! My husband and I both immediately fell in love with him, and we can't wait to bring him home! Hopefully he'll wean himself soon.

Now my fid family is complete! Next project: building an aviary for my birds to enjoy, just like the one that Sterling built.

I'll take pictures of him during my next visit. I'm SO excited!

Since there's more than one in the aviary and both are identical, I'm gonna assume that these macaws aren't hybrids and are simply located in a foreign country. Unusual. Beauties.

I have read online that you are not supposed to house greys and macaws. I have also read you can IF you have air purifiers.

Conflicting information. We are planning on ordering an Austin air cleaner before our macaw comes home.

I want to thank you all for the help you gave me over a year ago when we were getting ready to bring our CAG home. She is doing very well! Our lives are so much richer with her.

In late Nov or the first part of Dec, we will add a greenwing macaw. I am getting extensive training at the aviary when I visit him but I value the input from others who have a grey and a macaw.

I'm nervous. Really excited. He's at an aviary I volunteer at. I have watched him grow from a tiny baby and didn't think about him for our family. This last visit, I just knew he was the second bird we've been considering. (Edited to add:we had been discussing a macaw so this is not out of the blue) I've had the wonderful experience of interacting with him over several months. He's about 5-1/2 months. Thinking he will be weaned late Nov to early Dec.

Anyway, I'm hoping to hear about life with a grey and macaw.

I am lucky to know a very respected breeder of Blue Throat Macaws and she asked me to come to her home and help socialize her 11 week old babies. How could i say no? Gee play with baby birds all morning, what a hardship, lol. They are the cutest things, but i was told by the hubs that under no uncertain terms am i to bring one home. He keeps trying to tell me we are at full capacity here, thats why we are looking to move. We'll see, hahaha!

One morning poo had me gagging for some fresh air. I scrubbed his cage down yesterday, but the smell still lingered and i actually thought maybe an animal died in the wall or outside by the window or something. He is eating fine, lots of pellets when he is on his stand but nothing much when he is in the cage. I did switch from Zupreem Veggie blend to Zupreem Fruit blend, thinking they needed a change but i don't think this would cause the aroma. Then last night when we were putting them up for dinner, he would grab a noodle from his bowl and run to the bottom of the cage to eat it, come up for another bite then right back down. He would shred his paper while down there, so we are confused if we should be worried or if he was just playing down there. My plan is to get him to the vet, but money is a concern right now. I got the birds their own medical credit card but i have not gotten it yet, hopefully it comes in today! ( he gets cysts in his vent that have blocked his pooing and has had a few minor surgeries to remove them, i am just worried they may be back and further up his bum) Pat did get him to take a bath last night and he really enjoyed it, his poo sticks to his feathers, not that it was bad or anything but he thought maybe he was just uncomfortable. Nuts are also a big deal to him but everyone we handed him last night, he tossed out. Finally though, he did take an almond and munch on it. I am sure i am over reacting but he is my baby boy.

Me and Brutus

From tests to medication to you name it. He has a huge play room, lots of toys, radio, tv, movies, treats in foraging cups everywhere and mommy home 7 days a week. What more can one ask for?????

I recently switched avian vets after 10 years and it seems like this doctor is onto something. I will show picture 1 and then the next picture is week 2 and then week 3. Look at the amazing new growth. Now i only pray that this will stay.

AHAHHAHA it is still so very hot in Texas. Took the birds out this morning just for a little bit and they started panting immediately. We managed to stay out for about 30 minutes so i feel at least they felt the sun on there wings. Cannot wait for cooler days.

So today I went to a local pet shop and saw the most sweet Green Wing Macaw. His name is Rocky and he is 2 years old. Green Wing Macaws are the 2nd largest kinds of macaw right behind the Hyacinth Macaw. The Green Wing is supposedly nicknamed the "Gentle Giant" because he is so mild mannered. Anyhow, I have to stop myself from wanting this macaw because he is really and I mean really too much parrot for me. He is easily 36" long, that's 3 feet! And his beak is as long as my hand with the fingers extended. he is one big bird. Anyways, I had to share this sweet guy with you all.

http://www.parrot-bird.com/parrot-pictures/green_winged_macaw/Macaw-parrot-165.jpg

(this is not Rocky as I had no camera with me but this is a pretty close picture of what he looks like).

When I got home I called to see if Rocky was for sale, he is for $1,600. But my house is not big enough for 4 parrots and certainly not big enough for a Green Winged Macaw to even spread his wings out to fly. But if I thought I could manage such a bird, I would certainly bring him home in a heartbeat.

He has had her for the last 10 years, His wife and him are retired, they sold their home and bought an RV, where they will spend the rest of their time traveling! Which would be the reason why he had given her too me. Before my uncle had taken her in, he found her at a Pet shop, where she was COMPLETELY bald!!! The owner told him, an elderly couple had kept her locked up in a cage for who knows how long, because they could not handle her or take care of her... Over the 10 years my Uncle had koko she grew back almost all of her feathers minus some spots where there was such damage they will never grow back, her neck, under her wings, and her legs... Shes our bald neck birdy.. My uncle was the only one who ever handled her. So shes man bird.. and sad to say she just doesnt like me that much, but I still try! She is now in love with my fiance, that is her new man and he is all she wants. She is one Very very fiesty bird, she can be sweet, funny, but then her darkside can also come out at times... Which includes sometimes when I walk by and she flexs the steel cage bars, just to show me how tough she can be, then gives me this evil look like "yea thats right i can break your fingers off" haha. So, shes not good with strangers or people she does not know, and rarely shows affection. She is the queen of the castle! We have had her going on 2 years now, and she has laid eggs 3 times with in 2 months!!! My uncle said she has NEVER laid an egg for him before, so we were quite impressed!... Thats all for now though Must get back to work, and will continue about the life of Koko when I get home and post a pic so you can all see

Here we again, back from the vet.

Took Bubba in today for his first vet check since he came to live with us. I really figured, ok he lived with Oliver so what ever happens, it couldn't be any worse than a positive pdd. WRONG! Herpies? Really? Okay, now we wait for those tests to come back. What the heck have these birds been through, i am afraid to think? I spoke to him about the weird crop and his noises he makes when he poops. Who would have thought to look at his bumm? He had a huge, for lack of a better description, hemmroid hanging out almost closing his butt completely. We opted to start the " freezing " to remove what we can. He said could take up to 6 treatments. Poor fella. The crop may be engulfed due to the food not being able to flow at a normal pace outta his body. Gesh, and it can be passed to other birds, not air born but thru fluids.

So here it is....

I got one b&g macaw who tested positive for PDD

One b&g macaw who either has "hemmroids" or herpies

One CAG with a deformed foot

One dog with diabetes, 2 shots a day

One dog deathly afraid of the birds and won't come inside unless we go out and pick her up

Two other dogs who are just spoiled and needy

A sick husband

And CAG Bongo!

Calgon, take me away, please, and hurry! LOL

I thought i had removed my number from where ever it is listed that people keep calling us about their birds!

Hubby got a call yesterday about a 12 yr old b&g macaw that they want to give us. They said he hasn't been handled in a while and now they just can't. I know we can not take him in but i told them i will try and find him a forever home. They are getting me all the vet info and finding out if the cage will come with him. Sometimes living in my blissful, uninformed world is so nice. When thrown curves like this it reminds me just how many birds out there need help! I wish every person who had a whim to get a bird would be forced to read the parrot bill of rights and have to sign it, punishable by law if they do not follow those words as outlined! Yes, i am on my soap box but we added up how many birds we have found homes for in the last year and it is 9 birds not counting this one. There were 2 others that were in good shape, i new would find a home, that i didn't have to step in and help! Breaks my heart!
