Toby

He's around 6mos old. We had him DNA'd but definitely wasted our money there...we knew it would come back "HE'S ALL BOY". Greycie is not to thrilled with him at the moment but they're slowly getting better. We picked him up almost 1 month ago, kept him for two weeks, then returned him to the breeder on an arrangement to board him while we went on vacation. She was really attached to him because apparently "he's a real sweety". I'm guessing based on her knowledge and experience with Caiques that this little guy is kinda special. I'm not letting my guard down though...I fully expect a little feather-pants monster to emerge at some point.

Greycie tried exerting herself with him but he's fearless and stands his ground. With his strong little legs he doesn't let go of his perch easily so she's having a hard time flopping him to the ground like she used to do with Raven - until we put a stop to that. Now she's the one hitting the deck, except she can fly so she doesn't actually hit the deck. But he's winning these little attacks.

He loves to sit on shoulders and gently nibble ear lobes, or in the case with my wife, wind himself up in her hair. He's a real chatter-box. Does a lot of cute whistles. Greycie has picked up nearly everything he does including the annoying Caique alarm call. He much prefers to be hauled around with you and sit on your hand rather than be perched. He's clipped unfortunately but I believe he had learned to fly as he attempts to launch himself but then flutters to the ground. We'll let his feathers grow out. Greycie's turkey is cooked when that happens

We still miss our Raven dearly but are already falling head over heels with this little guy. We're still getting another Jardine's but with Greycie, Toby and the Jardine's eventually, we'll be at our limit of three.

So I was a little worried about Kyra, as she wasn't really eating...so I was handfeeding her, as that's the only way she would eat dinner. I finally figured out this morning a plate works really well for her. This morning she woke us up promptly at 7:30...I really need to go to bed earlier...and proceeded to play, and play, and play some more. After I figured out about the plate thing, she proceeded to eat, play, eat, play, eat, play and make a thorough mess of my desk. I have endeavored to clean my dining room table to make more room for the darling girl.

Here are some of her gluttony pics from this morning. And you'll notice a pic of my keyboard. I wrapped it in Glad's Press n Seal to save it from poopies and eaten keys. Although I must say she gives me plenty of poopy warning now that I've seen it happen. She wiggles her tail like she is dancin'! I will have to get some video of that it's just too cute!

Yay! I'm so glad that the sub rooms are open now.

Here is a pic of my soon-to-be Fid. I don't know which one yet, but hopefully will know in a week or so. The baby should be coming home the end of June or the beginning of July...as long as weaning goes as planned.

We are thinking Kahuna if it's a boy, and Kekoa for a girl. Or if I get really lucky and my hubby lets me get both of them....LOL

Behavior Problems

Playing with a caique can be a lot of fun. It can stimulate the bird to hop, interact fervently with toys and surf. However a common problem for many parrots is excitement that turns to aggressive behavior very similar to our beloved Amazons. Getting a caique too excited can potentially lead to a bite. If you want to play with a caique do so in a way that does not require you to handle the parrot until he has calmed down. This may mean playing with him on a table top, having lots of toys available he can chew and using a target to cue him to where you want him to go until playtime is over the parrot appears calmer. When you play, remember you caique can go into overdrive, stay calm, it will pass....

These little guys like fruit and fruit type pellets, wild caiques are used to eating nectar. You can try buying nectar mixes, usually sold for lorikeets or lories, or make your own. Try combining 5% dextrose wit 5% fructose, or cranberry juice, or any fruit juice. Serve this in the morning and throw away any leftovers by the end of the day.

Never serve your caiques honey, which can contain clostridium botulinum (birds are particularly vulnerable to botulism). Other no-nos are coffee, chocolate, apple seeds, and peach pits.

The brightly-colored (pronounced kye-eek).is endemic to the Amazon Rainforest of northern Brazil and southern Venezuela, and the Guiana highlands. A adult caique is 23 cm or 9 inches in length. They weight around 150 to 175 grams or 5.3 - 6.2 oz. Their average expected lifespan is 30 years.

Also called "Seven-Color Parrot" because of their highly defined black, green, yellow, orange, white and blue feathers. You have the White-headed snd Black-bellied Caique.

The antics of a hand fed Caique are a constant source of amusement. They can be very trusting and can be taught to lay upside down in the palm of your hand. These outgoing energetic birds make great companions for households containing children.
