Hello,

Haven't been on this site in ages, hope you're all doing well. I'm desperate. My congo was stolen while boarding at my vets office. 3 Congos and an Amazon were stolen from All Animals Vet in Calabasas, CA near Los Angeles, CA during a late night smash and grab. My bird is named Elwood and has a band, he's on the larger side, 512 grams. If you see any suspicious for sale adds please contact me. Thanks. Cash reward for anyone who can help secure a safe recovery.

To the admins. I would greatly appreciate if this or something similar could be bumped to a more visible part of the forum. Thanks.

And that's when the nightmare began. I noticed the door of the cage was open and Rico was gone! I ran around frantically calling out his name "Rico! Rico!". My heart was pounding hard and I could hardly breathe. I knew the chances of him coming home were slim to none since he had never flown outside his room before, let alone flown to me before. He was only a step-up on the finger kind of bird and that was it, but I loved the little fella all the same. After a few minutes I heard his squawk in a distance. I was instantly relieved that he was nearby and that there was still a chance. I took off running towards the woods, tearing threw the briers and thorns like they were fragile webs and each time I tripped on the hard earth, I bounced back up like I had super powers. Not easy for a lady of my size! I know now that it was pure adrenaline. I finally located him high in a pine tree, some 30 ft. up. The wind was blowing and I could tell the little guy was scared to death! Neither one of us knew what to do. He squawked repeatedly and I called his name over and over again. I started to panic. The sun was starting to set and I knew time was of essence. With one big gust of wind, Rico's tired legs finally let loose. He flapped those little out-of-shape wings awkwardly high into the sky until I could no longer see him. I was crushed. I knew that if he was caught in a gust, he would end up miles from our home. I searched the neighborhood in pitch dark with no luck. Back at home I decided to call my mother who is an Alabama falconer to get some advice. She put my mind at easy, telling me that after sunset, most birds perch for the night and don't fly until dawn. Where ever Rico was, I knew that he would stay put and give me some time to come up with a plan. That night, I reviewed our surveillance camera footage which revealed how Rico's cage door was opened. Our new puppy had pawed it open. I couldn't sleep. The thought of Rico out on his own, cold, hungry, and scared tore my heart in two. The next morning I called into work, I told them a "family emergency" happened. They won't understand otherwise. I was up before the sun and started on foot in the direction where Rico disappeared, no shower, no breakfast, and no coat. I couldn't spare any time. People thought I was the crazy neighbor who was walking early in the morning calling out "RICO!" while looking at tree tops. Two blocks away at approximately 7am, I heard his first squawk! I found him perched in the biggest pine tree in North Alabama! From 7am to 7pm I kept a close eye on him. I sat in a grassy area, trying to dodge fire ants and the sun. I could tell Rico needed me there, so I didn't leave until sundown. I said a quick prayer and told him good night. As I walked away, Rico gave one last squawk in the distance as though he were saying "Please don't leave me". It was the saddest thing I had ever heard. I cried all the way home, replaying him over and over in my head. Too heart broken to eat, shower, or even change clothes I fell into bed. Once again I cried myself to sleep. As soon as my alarm went off, I sprung out of bed, again no shower, no breakfast, but did grab a folding chair. This time if I was going to sit all day at least I would be comfortable. As I made my way towards the tree where Rico was last perched, I could hear his morning squawks. I set up camp across the street in a catholic church parking lot where I was and HE was in full view. At noon time I notice a huge bird soring high in the sky. I knew from hawk hunting that this could be Rico's worst nightmare. Hawks most of the time get what they come for...before I knew it, the resident redtail hawk was zooming in on my Rico. I screamed as loud as I could, but the hawk shot down towards Rico like a silver bullet. I closed my eyes and plugged my ears, knowing that Rico would scream as he was being ripped apart like so many of the birds do with my mother's hawk. Looking threw the slits of my closed eyes, I saw the hawk fly away. Not only did the Hawk return, but he came for Rico THREE times!! A nightmare for both of us. Rico was still alive, scared as hell, but ALIVE!!! How did the hawk not kill Rico? Was it because I made a promise to God that if Rico survived I would go to church? What ever it was, my miracle happened. By day three, the local people were curious as to why I had been sitting in one place from sunup to sundown. Many people pulled into the parking lot to ask if I needed help. Heck, one person even brought me lunch! Rico finally made a move that day. I brought out his favorite mashed banana in a ceramic mug. I knew that if he heard the clinking of the spoon on the ceramic mug, he would do something! That brave little bird jumped from the pine tree flew over me and crash landed in a tree located in the parking lot where I sat. I was so excited that he was making an effort to come to me!!! Still high in a tree, I tried to climb this time, but the branches were to far apart. Once again I was powerless, I was exhausted, I was emotionally drained. My mother arrived later in the day with her T perch, which is a perch that extends 20 ft. I knew Rico would be frightened of it and I risked him flying away from it, but I took a chance and left it out for him to get him used to it. Saturday evening came, and once again I went home without Rico. Sunday morning as usual I was out before the sun. Rico was still in the spot where he had been before. I felt like giving up. This is never going to happen, I thought to myself. And that's when Rico flew to the perch and I was able to lower him to me, grab him and shove him up my shirt!!! Just like that! I was in shock for the next couple weeks. The following Sunday, my husband said "Didn't you make a promise to go to church?". " Yeah, maybe next Sunday" I said. And without hesitation Rico flew from his perch to my shoulder and gave one loud squawk!!! It was the first and only time he had ever flown to me. "Guess we're going to church!" We dressed up and headed out to the catholic church where Rico was rescued! I just wanted to tell my story for those of you who have lost a parrot. DON'T GIVE UP!!

Found (almost)

Last night (2 Nov) my wife got a call from her friend saying that there was a small green parrot in a tree next to the building they work at. I grabbed a step ladder, flashlight, cage, and net. We drove there and found the bird. It was dark out so I'm not sure, but I think it was a conure. I set up the ladder and tried to talk the bird into coming to me. After a while I tried to catch it in the net. It flew to another tree. I tried the same tactic and failed again. We couldn't find it again but I'm sure it didn't go far. I think if it was daytime I would have had more luck. I looked for missing pets on Craig's List but didn't find any. This was next to the commissary on Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi. There are a lot of Cooper Hawks in the area. I might drive out there again during lunch break.

It's Been A Long Time Friends.

So much to tell you all about... What's it been? Years since I visited these pages... Most of my old friends I'm sure are still here... At least I can hope so... I just went through an incredible personal loss so I'm a little fragile these days.... But that's not why I'm here right now...

Its been a while since I lost my Ceasar. Yes, most of you don't know that my Caesar flew out an open door quite sometime ago. My heartbreak was immeasurable to say the least... Yeah, I did all the usual stuff, flyers, Internet, local pet stores... Searched and searched.. He's gone.. And I want to tell someone, anyone the pain and change in my life my lost Caesar has caused me.

I guess these things happen for a reason. We shall see..

Most of you know that I have passionately been searching for a found cag's home. Many thoughts have come to mind as I see how hard it can be to identify your bird to another person as confirmation is required and it should be.

1. It is so important to have your band info on file at home if your bird still wears it's band.

2. Micro chipping is the best in my opinion.

3. Never giving up!

4. Thinking your bird that has been missing for any length of time will not be traumatized and will welcome you is not always going to be the case.

5. Thinking that your bird will answer by name when another has found them isn't always the case either. After all it's NOT your voice that is saying their name. As we all know, greys are cautious and nervous around new faces.

Please feel free to add to my thoughts. I had my bands removed for. Safety reason in their cages when I am not home.

I am now wondering if perhaps I should micro chip my birds. They are all free flighted and outnmost of the day when I am at home. Is it safe? Are their any long term effects as it is a foreign object in their body. I know the chances they are caught are slim, but if their is the slightest chance they are found, I have a Hugh chance of finding out and proving it is my bird.

I would love to hear from others on this subject I am considering......

My friend has a 10 week old African Grey baby whom has just started flying this week. She called in tears this afternoon and asked me what she could do becasue he flew out the window. He flew some distance into a sports field where he landed in a very tall tree about 50m high. She cant get him to come down and no one can get into the tree. The fire station said they dont come out to help for those kind of things so we are stuck.

This is stil a BABY and I have been bawling my eyes out since it got dark and she had to leave him there. I told her just to be on the safe side, she should immediately go home and make flyers then post them all around the neighbourhood just in case he flies off during the night and lands in someones property. What else should we do.

i AM JUST SO SAD AND NOT REALLY BEING OF ANY HELP AT THIS STAGE, CRYING ALL NIGHT LONG.

CAN I POST THE DETAILS HERE FOR OUR SOUTH AFRICAN FRIENDS WHO ARE POSSIBLY ALSO HERE AND THEY COULD HELP SPREAD THE WORD. PLEASE

Hi all,

I haven't been active here in, well, a VERY long time, but I'm desperate. Our 13 yr old Timneh African Grey, Charlie, got loose this past Saturday. I've been looking for him from just before sun up, till just after dark everyday.

We've put up LOST posters, contacted the human societies and animal shelters, filed a report with animal control, put an ad on craigslist, and put out a missing parrot alerts. My 10yr old son has gone door to door through out the neighborhood and stops people out jogging/walking/biking. He had an announcement done at school.

I walk up and down through the streets and between the backyards calling him, whistling, playing the microwave beep I recorded on my phone. I carry a bag of Doritos with me shaking it asking if he wants a treat. He's just not answering!

Yesterday, I was walking down the street calling for him, and he flew across the road and circled back to me, started doing the "back peddle" wing landing thing to come down when a huge gust of wind caught him, threw him up and back in the opposite direction, sent him spiraling, he caught himself just above a tree line and then I couldn't see him anymore. I've been searching that area since. But when they're that high, who knows how far in either direction they go.

There's a hawk that's nested in that area too. I don't know if he'd stay where he landed, or get out that area.

If he would just TALK or make some noise different than all the other birds I could find him! How do I get him to talk or whistle? I've tried everything I can think of.

I'm in Michigan, and the fall weather is coming in. It stormed last night, bringing in a cold front. Temps only got into the 50's last night, but today it's a high of 60, suppose to rain again this evening and our low tonight is suppose to be 37! Can he survive the wet cold?

I don't know if I should keep centering my search where I saw him last, or broaden it out more. When he flew over me yesterday, he was wobbly, reminded me of a baby taking it's first steps, but in wing form. His wings aren't clipped, but he only flies a few feet at a time in the house.

My African Grey Parrot Alvaro flew out of a window yesterday. I live on the 18th floor and i am very worried about whether he was able to land safely or not...(note:he doesn't have much experience in flying but his wings have never been clipped). There are a lot of parks and trees around and the search party couldn't find any sign of him. We have placed Wanted posters all around the neighbourhood but nobody has called yet. Is it possible for somebody to have taken it? Also will he be too scared to go around searching for food/water (note:the temperatures are dangerously high here) or will he pick a branch and remain there(usual behaviour)

There is a fair amount of blocks of flats around and unluckily yesterday was the day the tallest trees were cut down so there were a lot of people and noise that could have scared him off even further away. HELP!! I NEED TIPS ON HOW TO GET HIM BACK/LURE HIM CLOSER TO HOME/FIND A SIGN THAT HE IS STILL OUT THERE SOMEWHERE!!!! Thank you.

hello everyone.

it's been a while since I've posted but I do come on time to time and read your posts whenever I have a chance. I want to share my absolutely scariest 3 days of my time with my TAG Zuri.

I've had Zuri now for 4 years and honestly the first 2 he was clipped and couldn't fly. I let his wing feathers grow in after to allow him to be a true bird and until last Friday I didn't regret it.

I decided to take Zuri and our dog Zoe to the park to get fresh air and sunshine. we live in Canada and summers are too short. I have a custom (bird safe) travel carrier made from a large cat/dog crate. enough so that Zuri can get sunshine as we live in a condo so I do not have a backyard. Well anyways we were having a good time my wife and I and didn't realized he had chewed through a corner of the screen and was wedging his way through the hole. I have been using this carrier for 3 years so never thought of it. he got out and climbed ontop of the carrier and to my horror he went to fly to me but caught a gust of wind and set him away to the left. he began to climb and tried to turn back towards us but must've panicked and sped up and kept gaining altitude. he started heading for a deep forested area and I took off to track his path. unfortunately I lost him because I couldn't see over the trees, I ran as hard as I could around the bush to the other side and began the search. we searched for almost 5 hours to no avail. I went through the bush and my wife the surrounding area frantically looking for Zuri. his last direction was south and we figured he must've kept going that way. I never realized how great of a flier he was til that day. his stamina must've been great with the last 2 years training of flying in our condo. It was getting dark and we went home and printed 50 copies of flyers and posted them everywhere in the neighbourhood. we woke up and sunrise after a sleepless night and began calling him and ringing his fav bell in the area. we searched all day again and broadened the area. our neighbourhood is filled with forest and nature areas so it was no easy task. the dread set in as we have countless raccoons, hawks, cats, crows ive seen, we kept hope. again a horrible sleepless night now with sunburn. this night it got cool around 17 degrees celcious. sorry don't know the conversion to Fahrenheit. day time temps were in the high 30's again celcious. it was now Sunday morning and I'll be honest I was thinking very bad things for him. we this morning now gone door to door at sunrise and put flyers in people's mailboxes. thinking maybe someone has him in their backyard and don't realize what he is. we came home at noon exhausted and empty. my eyes were dry and painful from the crying for 2 days.

at around 1pm we got a call asking if we have found our parrot. we were so excited to get a call but it wasn't that he was found. we again felt despair. not more than 30 mins later our angels called. she said we think we have your parrot!!! my wife hardly knew what to say and forgot to get her address she was soo excited. we raced out the door.

when we got there it was Zuri, exhausted dehydrated but aliveeee. he only had a slight scratch over his right nostril probably from landing in a tree. these wonderful people said they were asked by their neighbour to help Zuri because she had to get to church and didn't know what to do with him. he had flown to her porch that morning and wouldn't leave. the husband didn't know if Zuri was tame and put a stick for him to step on and Zuri instead stepped on his hand. he brought him into their home and feed him sunflower seeds and water. he then went to the local store to see if there was a poster and there was ours.

what's amazing about this all is that Zuri had done a complete 180 turn back from the direction we saw him go. he was now less then 1 block from our building. it was almost a mile back from where i last saw him and over a very busy highway. when she told us her address we were in shock. I thought he would be miles away not a block. he knew the direction but since we were in a building he couldn't pinpoint where. but since we take him to both our in laws homes he must've felt the drive to go to a back porch course this is my common sense thinking only Zuri knows.

the lesson of this story is never give up on your bird and don't tunnel vision one direction they may go. like Zuri he may just have enough instinct to go the direction home.

he slept most of the day Sunday and made us tear when he told us at sunset "time for bed" just like normal and it was a sight and sound for sore eyes. today he has bounced back and been 99% of his normal self. we are just soo happy to have our little guy back into our family!

First I want to say that I never take my birds outside unless in a carrier. Xandir is harness/leash trained but I don’t have one yet. He got out when he crashed into a window screen and the screen popped out.

As you know a friend and I have been posting fliers. Well, for some stupid reason I didn’t even think to post any on my own street. I live on a long dead end so yesterday morning before work I put 2 at the beginning of my street. One on each side so you could see one or the other depending on if you were making a right or left turn onto the street.

This morning just after leaving for work (I got about 5 or 6 blocks) my cell phone rang. It was a local number so I answered it even though I was driving. It was a young boy and he asked if I lost a gray bird with a red tail because they have him. It turned out they live on my street just about 2 ½ blocks down.

I turned around and headed to their house. As I made the right turn onto my street I noticed the flier on the fence was gone. So it seems that if I had posted fliers on my street to begin with I might have had him home sooner. But I was so happy to see him I didn’t think to ask how long they had him. They did, however, have him long enough to have bought a bag of bird seed for AG”s.

I told the kids (2 boys and a girl) that I would give them a cash reward for finding and taking care of Xandir for me. So when I do that I’ll ask how long the had him.

When I got home from work Xandir wouldn’t stop begging to be fed. I don’t doubt that he was hungry but I figured more than that he needed to feel safe and to know he would be taken care of. So even though he shouldn’t have formula (because of the vitamin D overdose) I fed him all he wanted. He was so tired that once he was full and content he couldn’t keep his eyes open.

I have joined this forum hoping to get some info regarding a lost bird. I have been adopted by an african grey and I would like to find his owner. I will have him scanned for a chip tomorrow if I can get him in a smaller cage for transport. In the meantime is there a database available that lists the info on his leg band? I've checked some lost and found sites but nothing has been reported yet.

Thanks for you help,

He was in my bedroom on the play stand and I had gone into the kitchen. I heard him fly and "crash land" and went to go check on him. He apparently hit the screen and it fell out. I'm in a second floor apartment and I looked down and saw him on the ground. I ran out, down, and around the building. I came around the corner slowly while talking to him and just as I was almost close enough to get him he flew off.

I can't stop crying.

Just wanted to vent a bit.......we have a local animal shelter called Dakin Anuimal Shelter. When it started many years ago, it was literally almost a shack of a building, trying to rescue and help animals in need. They are a no-kill shelter dealing mostly in cats and dogs, an occassionally bunny or bird, etc. Over the years, they have recieved enough donations to build a better building and start a bigger facility in another area. They offer low cost vaccines and spaying and neutering for anyone.

Their animals are kept in areas out of view from the public, you have to enter, and be allowed to go into the rooms to see those up for adoption. From the outside, it is mostly brick with nothing to see.

This past Tuesday night, someone thru a cinder block through their front window, and went into the building and stole 2 parakeets and a cockatiel..........that was it. Unbelievable!!!! It infuriates me someone did that, there are so many available on Craig's list, it is easy to get a free bird!!! Ugh,
